Scott Cluthe's guest tonight is Jim Owen author of The TRY: Reclaiming the American Dream and creator of the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation.

Is there a secret to attaining real success and fulfillment in life? To Jim Owen, it’s all about having “The TRY”— that quality of giving 100% to whatever task or challenge is at hand.

In standard English usage, 'try' is a verb that means 'to make an attempt.' But in cowboy culture, the word is a noun invested with profound meaning. When Cowboys say, 'That cow hand, he's got try,' the quality of giving something every ounce of effort you can muster.

After a successful 35-year business career, Jim Owen reinvented himself as an author, film producer and social innovator. He also created the Center for Cowboy Ethics and Leadership, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation, to help spread the message that “we can all be heroes in our own lives.” Jim’s book credits include Cowboy Ethics & Cowboy Values.

Jim found his calling in 2003 when he was so dismayed by the country’s spreading epidemic of corporate scandals and social discord that he felt compelled to speak out, urging a return to the basic core values that all Americans can share. Inspired by his life-long interest in Western history and lore, Jim coined the phrase “Cowboy Ethics” and wrote his book distilling the unwritten Code of the West into “Ten Principles to Live By.”
