Brother Hekima, embraced Black Nationalism and became a citizen and leader in the Republic of New Africa. Elected to serve as 1st Vice President. In August of 1971, Hekima was involved in a deadly shootout between the RNA and Jackson, MS police and FBI. He is Founder of “Functional Unity”.

Sister Tamu Sana Kanyma, during visit, there was a surprise, predawn attack on the Government Center, by the Jackson police force and the FBI. There was an exchange of gun fire which left one police mortally wounded, and two others wounded. She, along with the other 10 people involved became known as the RNA-11. Tamu was incarcerated for ten months, then released in June 1972. The two have been married 35 years.

As I emerged into the heat of the 'fire fight', a bullet aimed to kill me went blazing in slow motion past my eyes. But God, I was spared..."
