Dawn Mellion Patin is an Agricultural Specialist with the Cooperative Extension Program at Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.  Prior to accepting this position, Dr. Mellion Patin was a member of the faculty in the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Education. She is also the Director of the 2501 Program for the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, a post she has held since 1999. Her current interest and the majority of her efforts revolve around working with socially disadvantaged, limited resources agricultural producers and their families.

Dr. Mellion Patin received her B.S. degree in Plant and Soil Science and the Masters of Education degree in Agriculture and Extension Education from Southern University in 1990 and 1991 respectively.  She continued her education at Iowa State University where she earned the Ph.D. in Agriculture and Extension Education in 1995.  In December of 2008, she completed her studies and was awarded a MBA from Jones International University.

Dr. Mellion Patin’s was an inaugural member of LEAD 21: Leadership Development for the 21st Century.  This course, designed to “Linking Research, Academics, and Extension”, is intended to meet the future needs for leadership development of faculty and university administrators.

Her proudest accomplishments to date, comes through her work with others, particularly the  graduates of the  Small Farmer Agricultural Leadership Institute Classes I, II and III.

Dr. Mellion- Patin is divorced and the mother of a son, Myles Victor who is a 5th grader at Southern University Laboratory School.
