Have you ever wondered why chronic conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer are all on the rise? Unfortunately, most big farms use chemicals, which increases our risk of developing these life-threatening conditions. The good news is that many individuals are taking back their freedom and their health by growing their own food. They are growing wherever they are and whatever style suits them. Container gardens, raised beds, on patios, hydroponics, aquaponics. You name it people are doing it, successfully! There are many benefits to raising your own foods such as increasing your access to fresh produce, decreasing your monthly grocery bill, knowing where your food comes from, and equipping yourself/family with survival skills. With all that said, I know you are ready to start a home garden for you and your family so, ‘The Voice of Rural America’ will be hosting a segment, “So You Want To Grow Your Own Food?” on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 5pm CST/6pm EST. Our guest speaker, Erika Lachelle, owner of Be And It Is Homestead, will share some knowledge on how you can easily and affordably start a home garden. Min’imah Shaheed grew up on a farm in Arkansas with her mother, father, and nine siblings who were all sharecroppers. Advancing to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she went back to school after getting married and rearing seven children. Mrs. Shaheed is also the proud grandmother of ten, and has six great grandchildren. She was a factory worker before going back to school. She was employed there for 10 years and everyday she said that she was going to quit. A thought would bombard her mind, such as: “You’re supposed to be helping human beings and not getting someone rich.” Each day she noticed that she was getting sicker by the moment. This condition progressed over time; eventually causing Mrs. Shaheed to quit her job. With a thirst for knowledge, at age 40, Mrs. Shaheed went back to school to advance her skills in basic academics. In the process, one of her instructors in her reading class asked her “To get her G.E.D. and go into the college crossover program.” Mrs. Shaheed said, “Oh no, I can’t do college work!” And his reply was, “Oh yes you can.” The math instructor said, “Mrs. Shaheed, you have great potential.” She replied, “Where.” He replied, “You have to bring them out.” So that motivated her to continue with her education. She set her goals by age 50; she would have her G.E.D. Associate and a Bachelor Degrees by age 50. But she accomplished them at 49. Mrs. Shaheed said, “Returning back to school was the best part of her life. The modest, 72-acre farm, established 4 and 1/2 years ago sits in the heart of the New Zion community, in Louisville, Mississippi. Migrating from the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, we were inspired to take control over our own food source as a means of creating a healthier lifestyle for ourselves.  The fact that Alonzo spent his childhood on his family’s farm in Louisville, in addition to Winston County being home of the Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC), one of the best support systems for small farmers this side of the Mississippi; the decision was unanimous -  relocate to Mississippi and that we did.  We started the farm with a few chickens and five bred heifers received from the WCSHC Heifer program.  We have also taken advantage of several of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) practices supported by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Those practices include perimeter and cross fencing, lime and fertilizer, three ponds, and drip irrigation system.  Although farming is in Alonzo’s blood, I arrived to Mississippi without any farm experience.  However, I have always been one who welcomes change and therefore have confronted these new challenges by learning hands on from Alonzo as well as gaining knowledge through our participation in workshops and seminars sponsored by Mississippi State University Extension Services, Alcorn State University Agricultural Services, and other available resources.  Our membership with WCSHC also affords us the opportunity to participate in Agricultural related field trips, conferences, and workshops. We have also received a variety of vegetable plants and fruit trees, beyond belief.       01:01:00savingruralamericanoAM-PM Vegetable and Beef Farm,Louisville,Mississippi,Alonzo and Peggy Miller,Winston County Self Help CooperativeAM-PM Vegetable and Beef Farm is owned and operated by Alonzo and Peggy Miller, for whom the farm is named after ( He’s AM and She’s PM). She met many wonderful instructors and professors whom she felt helped her build self-confident.    She received her Associate Degree in Human Services at Milwaukee Area Technical College and her Bachelors at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.  01:01:00savingruralamericanoMinimah Shaheed,Milwaukee,Wisconsin,Knowledge is Power,Unity of OnenessMin’imah Shaheed grew up on a farm in Arkansas with her mother, father, and nine siblings who were all sharecroppers.  Advancing to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she wMother’s Day Celebrationhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/savingruralamerica/2013/05/07/mothers-day-celebrationSelf Helphttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/savingruralamerica/2013/05/07/mothers-day-celebration/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/savingruralamerica/2013/05/07/mothers-day-celebrationTue, 07 May 2013 23:30:00 GMTMother’s Day CelebrationThe Winston County Self Help Cooperative will celebrate the ladies of this award winning organization with a Mother’s Day Celebration May 7, 2013, 6:30pm from Harrington Soul Food Restaurant 606 West Main Street in Louisville, MS. In the four decades since the founding of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives, there has been significant work, participation and development of low-income people and their communities. There are three major themes of the Federation’s mission, work and accomplishments over the past forty years: • to develop cooperatives and credit unions as a means for people to enhance the quality of their lives and improve their communities; • to save, protect and expand the landholdings of Black family farmers in the South; • to develop, advocate and support public policies to benefit our membership of Black and other family farmers and low income rural communities. Throughout its history, the Federation has woven these themes together to create a strong community based movement of organizations seeped in struggle, tested by time, experienced in fighting exploitation and knowledgeable of the tactics, tools and techniques needed to help people build their own property and progress. Harris Victor L. Harris, publisher and editor of Minority Landowner Magazine will host the magazine's 6th Anniversary Conference February 23-25 in Raleigh, North Carolina. The conference theme is "Introducing the North Carolina Farm Turnaround Team." The Team consists of resource professionals in the areas of financial management, technical assistance, marketing and succession planning, who will work one-on-one with farm family enterprises to address deficiencies and inefficiencies in their operation, and suggest strategies to turn things around.   An exciting part of the conference will be a legal panel consisting of attorneys in the areas of wills, estate planning, foreclosure and bankruptcy. Volunteer attorneys will also be available to meet one-on-one with farmers to discuss the importance of having a will and estate plan. Many minority farmers do not have a will, and that is one factor that contributes to land loss.   Harris first published Minority Landowner in 2006. The magazine has an audience of minority and limited resource farmers, ranchers and forest landowners across the country, providing information to help them increase productivity of their land management operation, which can increase their profitability, which increases their ability to maintain ownership of their land. 00:58:00savingruralamericanoVictor L Harris,Minority Landowner Magazine,6th Anniversary Conference February 23 25 in Raleigh North Carolina,Frank Taylor,Winston County Self Help CooperativeVictor L. The “Voice of Rural America” Frank Taylor will be answering your questions and concerns about issues facing rural America. WCSHC Purpose WCSHC experienced a reincarnation in 1997 with Frank Taylor, as president and Gus Townes mentor. WCSHC’s membership had dwindled to four members; however, Omerio & Dee Dotson, Mary Hannah and Bobby Hardin’s founding members’ commitment to rejuvenate WCSHC’s mission of assisting small farmers and landowners came to fruition. WCSHC’s membership adopted a mantra of “Helping Saving Rural America” to empower members with inspiration and motivation to become better stewards of their natural resources. Members focused their energies on accessing services from USDA and non-profit organizations to stimulate growth in farm incomes and strengthen family relationships. Mary Hannah founding members stated, “We needed an innovated strategy of attracting energetic members and incite thought provoking ideals to broaden WCSHC’s community image. We formulated a four-point plan of action…finance, health, housing, and youth. This plan of action-ignited discourse among some members because they only wanted to focus on agriculture related issues; and not embraces the holistic approach of surviving in rural America. However, the leadership galvanized and steamed forward on housing, health, finance, and developed a youth component to personify WCSHC’s efforts of progressing in a new direction. Today, “WCSHC’s membership consists of 56 vibrant members from three surrounding counties”. We collaborate with USDA agency & non-profit organizations and deliver relevant information in a timely manner to generate revenue for small farmers. We believe Winston County Self Help Cooperative and Youth Group will exist into perpetuity with its mission of helping save rural America”.   01:01:00savingruralamericanoWCSHC,Winston Count Self Help Cooperative,Frank Taylor,Louisville MS,Voice of Rural AmericaThe “Voice of Rural America” Frank Taylor will be answering your questions and concerns about issues facing rural America. The co-op received charter status from MS’s Secretary of State Office October 1988. Larry Miller of Beat-Four Cooperative (Macon, MS) and Ben Burkett State Director of Mississippi Association of Cooperatives worked fervently to help establish WCSHC.“We organized (WCSHC) to assist small farmers and landowners to sell and buy in bulk according to founding members Omerio Dotson. Small family farmers were under-seize due to un-favorable financial conditions and USDA’s lack of interest to serve black farmers. We needed an outlet to earn more income from our natural resources and increase sustainability in rural Winston County. Therefore, WCSHC designed a vehicle for small farmers and landowners to work collectively and overcome agriculture’s adversities.” Columbus McReynolds served as president from 1985-1992 and created a formidable team of farmers and landowners. WCSHC’s membership consisted of 12 members from Winston, Choctaw and Oktibbeha Counties and convened on first Thursday at East Central Federal Union Building on Highway 397. WCSHC members received animals through Heifers International to enhance and improve cattle genetics…pigs to start swine operations. Additionally, WCSHC received funds through Self-Development of People (a ministry Of the Presbyterian Church USA) to erect a feed grinding meal.
