This community celebration distinguishes local organizations that hire and retain differently-abled people, including those with Down syndrome, and recognizes the contributions made by these employees. According to the National Down Syndrome Congress, 80 percent of the 15,000 people of working age (18-60) with Down syndrome are unemployed. Low expectations and a lack of understanding about the skills and work ethic many people with Down syndrome possess have contributed to this statistic. LDSS hopes to reverse this trend by encouraging Savannah area employers to give differently-abled workers a chance. “Dignity and self-respect are borne out of feeling that what we have to offer makes a difference,” said LDSS Night of Champions Chairperson, Allyson Harvin.  This year’s Night of Champions will be emceed again by celebrity chef and author, Jamie Deen. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online at nightofchampions.org For more information, please contact Allyson Harvin at awharvin@gmail.com. The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) is a family support group to benefit people with Down syndrome and their families through local leadership, outreach, education, and advocacy to champion and celebrate acceptance and inclusion. Meetings are held every 4th Tuesday of the month. LDSS is an affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society. Robyn wanted a business that combined her passion for fashion with her new job as a mother.  She became one of Matilda Jane Clothing’s first independent representatives, known as Trunk Keepers.   Robyn's career began in  fashion merchandising in New York. But  Being a self-proclaimed  "Southern girl" her heart led her back home where she received a master’s degree in occupational therapy at the Medical University of South Carolina. Symptoms include bad breath, red or swollen gums, and receding gums. Dr. Canfield will explain the benefits of early detection and the process to determine patients’ risks of these diseases. According Dentistry Today, every sixty minutes, a person dies from oral cancer. The disease is typically associated with long-term tobacco use, but it is becoming more frequent in young adults who have never smoked. Besides tobacco use, the risk factors that could lead to oral cancer include DNA abnormalities or family history. But the main cause, especially in young adults who don’t smoke, is the human papillomavirus (HPV), which may be spread by sexually active people through intimate contact. “HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which was once the leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the United States,” said Dr. Canfield, “Now that women routinely get PAP tests, which provide early detection of conditions that could lead to cervical cancer, those cancer rates are on the decline. In fact, these days, a person is three times more likely to die from oral cancer than cervical cancer.” The Inspiring Smiles Series will take place at Dr. Canfield’s office located at 7360 Skidaway Rd., Suite H2. It is free to attend. To RSVP, call Dr. Canfield at 912-349-0472. Dr. Canfield will also be giving away free oral cancer screenings during the month of April. 00:24:0064183noDr. angela canfield, laurie ross, marjorie young, carriage trade pr,sandfly family dentalDr. Angela Canfield Holds Second Inspiring Smiles Series Talk in Honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month (SAVANNAH, GA) Dr. Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family DCitizens Called to Public Hearing about Palmetto Pipeline Threat on April 21http://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/07/citizens-called-to-public-hearing-about-palmetto-pipeline-threat-on-april-21Businesshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/07/citizens-called-to-public-hearing-about-palmetto-pipeline-threat-on-april-21/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/07/citizens-called-to-public-hearing-about-palmetto-pipeline-threat-on-april-21Tue, 07 Apr 2015 15:00:00 GMTCitizens Called to Public Hearing about Palmetto Pipeline Threat on April 21Local citizens are asked by the Facebook group Push Back the Pipeline and Ogeechee and Savannah Riverkeepers to join together to voice their displeasure at the proposed pipeline and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)’s handling of this process. The collaboration invites all concerned persons to meet and discuss the implications of this project at the GDOT public hearing on Tuesday, April 21 at the Richmond Hill City Center (520 Cedar Street) beginning at 5 p.m. Kinder Morgan, the largest energy infrastructure company in North America, plans to build the buried pipeline to transport gasoline, ethanol and diesel from the Gulf Coast to the South East. The company applied to the GDOT for a certificate of public convenience and necessity, which if approved, will authorize it to condemn property from private citizens and cannot be appealed. Time is running out on the 90-day period to fight the application and after the GDOT public hearing on Tuesday, April 21, it will be too late for citizens to voice their issues. Top Reasons Why Citizens Against the Palmetto Pipeline: • Eminent Domain for a Private Company is WRONG. • Big Oil Monopoly = Higher prices at the pump. • 250 Georgia jobs lost. • Private Property will be TAKEN. • Georgia deserves answers from Kinder Morgan not Empty Promises. • Pipeline would endanger rivers, marshes and wetlands. • Palmetto pipeline is not earthquake proof; Savannah and Coastal Georgia run along a fault line and are exposed to seismic risk. A rally is also scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at noon on Johnson Square in Savannah, but it is believed that the real impact will come from the demonstration presented at the GDOT public hearing on Tuesday, April 21.     00:29:0064183nopalmetto pipeline, kinder morgan, savannah river, carriage, carriage trade prLocal citizens are asked by the Facebook group Push Back the Pipeline and Ogeechee and Savannah Riverkeepers to join together to voice their displeasure at the2nd Encourage Health Series by Enmark with Drew McKenzie on April 28http://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/06/2nd-encourage-health-series-by-enmark-with-drew-mckenzie-on-april-28Businesshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/06/2nd-encourage-health-series-by-enmark-with-drew-mckenzie-on-april-28/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/savannahopenforbusiness/2015/04/06/2nd-encourage-health-series-by-enmark-with-drew-mckenzie-on-april-28Mon, 06 Apr 2015 16:00:00 GMT2nd Encourage Health Series by Enmark with Drew McKenzie on April 28  Enmark Encourage Health Educational Series Announces Second Lecture will Present “Crossfit, Why and How It Works in Weight Loss” (SAVANNAH, GA) Tuesday, April 28, the second lecture in the 2015 Enmark Encourage Health Education Series, “Crossfit, Why and How It Works in Weight Loss,” will be presented by Drew McKenzie, owner and operator with Crossfit Hyperformance.
