The new film Gangster Squad uses the song “The Hills of California” as performed by Johnny Mercer and the Pied Pipers. This song was written in 1947 by Robert Hayward and Robert Staver. This marks the first time this song will be used in film and television.

 

Johnny Mercer (November 18, 1909 – June 25, 1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter and singer. Mercer was also a co-founder of Capitol Records, and friends with the founder of then Capitol Songs (now Criterion Music Corp.) Michael H. Goldsen.
