    Mitsubishi Lancer GTS

We recorded a 0-60-mph sprint of 7.7 seconds, a healthy 1.1 seconds quicker than the less powerful 2008 model. The GTS's acceleration now compares favorably with that of similarly powered competitors like the Mazda 3 s Sport and Subaru Impreza 2.5i. Fuel economy, however, is underwhelming at an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/28 highway and 23 mpg in mixed driving. Our test car managed slightly more than 21 mpg in our enthusiastic hands.

    Performance

Of course, it should come as no surprise that best-in-class V8 power comes with pretty terrible gas mileage. EPA estimates are 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined. Over the course of 1,270 miles in two identical Dakotas, we matched the EPA's combined number, even though a majority of those miles were on the highway. By comparison, the V6-powered Toyota Tacoma provides nearly the same acceleration capabilities with 3 more miles per gallon in the combined cycle — something to consider if only 6,500 pounds of towing capacity is enough.

    Hyundai Sonata Limited

    Comfort

As with all Sonatas, our Limited's interior space is generous, allowing for easy ingress and egress. Front seat comfort is exceptional, with plenty of power-adjustable features that are found across all Sonata trim levels as either standard or optional equipment. Rear seating is equally comfortable — even for three adults — though some may find the seat bottoms on the short side. If we were to find fault anywhere, it would be the stiff, plasticky feel of the leather seats.

"This might be the perfect car," exclaimed one of our road test editors after putting the 2008 BMW 550i through its paces at our test track. "It's the perfect size, looks great, it's fast, it handles. Does everything well." You could throw in supremely comfortable, quiet on the highway, luxuriously appointed and beautifully built. We would never go so far as to declare it "the perfect car" — there are always going to be a few areas of contention — but the BMW 550i would most certainly be among the nominees with Vegas odds in its favor.

Saturn Astra XR Coupe: Comfort

Despite its shortcomings, there are still ways in which the 2009 Saturn Astra tries to be a sporty car. For example, the front seats are firm and aggressively bolstered for a compact hatchback, and offer good support. The seats have a wide range of adjustability, although the manual seatback adjustment knob is inherently hard on hands and wrists. The manual lumbar is a nice feature, especially for long road trips. In our time with the car, the Astra coupe's front seats comfortably accommodated drivers and passengers of various sizes.

Toyota Camry Hybrid
Who Should Buy This Vehicle?

Consumers who want all the functionality and performance of a top-rated family sedan along with fuel economy that trumps that of even the most efficient gas-powered compacts. They'll have to pay for it, though. For reference, a four-cylinder Camry LE with an automatic transmission starts at $21,075, which is nearly $5,000 less than the Camry Hybrid's base price. However, it lacks the latter's standard keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and eight-way power driver seat — and of course its fuel economy can't compare.

Saturn Astra XR Coupe

The field of fun yet functional hatchback coupes under $20,000 hasn't ever been what you'd call broad. So when GM announced it would bring its Opel Astra across the Atlantic and re-brand it as a replacement for the Saturn Ion for 2008, those who knew the European brand's reputation for good build quality and sharp handling were hopeful that the Saturn Astra would breathe fresh competition into a class led by only a select few.

One of our few complaints is that, for a family-focused vehicle, there is a surprising lack of just-right medium-size storage bins, though there are many small storage compartments. Another gripe from the driver seat is that the small, similarly shaped buttons of the climate and audio controls are attractive and symmetrical, but these very qualities make them more difficult to use. The optional touchscreen navigation system now includes a rear back-up camera, which helps with rearward visibility in a vehicle of this size, but it comes with a hefty $2,340 price tag.
