The Jam Alker Project - Stories of Addiction and Recovery Learn More
Who is Jam Alker?
I’ve been writing songs and playing guitar since I was 14. Since then music was a constant in my life. I’ve been in and out of bands, toured around the country, made a few records, except for a void of 10 long years.
During those years, I chased money and status. The choices I made were ultimately self-destructive… All I was doing was shoveling dirt into a bottomless hole; searching for purpose in the wrong places. I was restless, irritable and discontent.
In the depths of misery and addiction, on the verge of losing everything, I finally reached out for help.
I checked into treatment with nothing but a duffle bag and my guitar. It was there that I began writing again.
It started with a request from my counselor: to perform the simple act of turning my experiences into music. I wrote about the fear, the uncertainty, the pain… and eventually about the new path I was set upon. I wrote as therapy, without thinking twice about whether anyone else would ever hear it.
What I Do Now
When I decided to share some of my music online, I was overwhelmed by the response. The songs I'd written weren't just helping me heal. They were also touching the lives of people fighting the same demons. As I continue to play for others in recovery, I'm seeing how music forges profound connections. We share the same stories; we share the same fight.
