April 17, 2014 - LIVING A RICHER LIFE: with Celebrity Chef Charles Mattocks, Emmy Nominated Actor, Global Diabetes Advocate and the Nephew of the Legendary Reggae Star Bob Marley.

Author of three books, Eat Cheap but Eat WellDiabetes and Healthy Eating and his new book titled, The Budget-Friendly Fresh and Local Diabetes Cookbook.

THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE: Diabetes imposes a large economic burden on the national healthcare system. Healthcare expenditures on diabetes are estimated to account for over 15% of the total healthcare expenditures in the world this year. Type-1 Diabetes is not preventable and there is no cure. A Type-1 diabetic’s own immune system fights the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. However, patients can control their blood sugar with daily insulin shots. Type-2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes. A Type-2 diabetic’s body just doesn’t make enough insulin, or it can't use the insulin correctly, so the cells can't process blood sugar correctly. But, there are often no symptoms. That’s why it is called the “silent killer.” Type-2 Diabetes can be prevented with healthy eating and physical activity. Being overweight, eating unhealthy foods, not exercising, and having high blood pressure can increase your risk for Type-2 Diabetes.  How can we best take charge of our health and fight this life changing disease?

Chef Mattocks will share his thoughts on diabetes, healthy eating and how to take charge of your health.
