Sarah Palin's strange policy of forcing rape victims to pay for their own rape kits while she was mayor of the now-infamous town of Wasilla. The most interesting take I've found is posted by Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore who relates the following: I sat with a rape victim during the "harvesting of evidence". Mascara smeared eyes stared blankly out from a cave of shame. "We've got swimmers," announced the forensic tech in the lab next door. My friend didn't look surprised. In her 60's, she was still asked if she felt the need for emergency contraception. Surviving the process would have only been compounded and made worse with an itemized bill; victimized twice courtesy of Sarah Palin and the city of Wasilla. Much can be learned about the Palin Administration's family values from reviewing their spending priorities. Former Chief of Police Irl Stambaugh included forensic rape kits (up to $1,200 per kit) in his budget requests. He was fired by Palin in 1997. In her termination letter, Palin wrote, "...I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment... " Staumbaugh headed the police department since it was created in 1993. Before that, he served 22 years with the Anchorage Police Department rising to the rank of captain. Sarah Palin hired Charlie Fannon as the new Wasilla Chief of Police and said it was one of her best decisions as mayor. Fannon eliminated the forensic rape kits from the budget. Though the number of rapes weren't reported, Fannon claimed it would save Wasilla taxpayers $5,000 to $14,000 a year. Palin supporters ought to be taking a much closer look at her record on these types of issues (charging rape victims for evidentiary examinations so their attackers can be brought to trial) than whether she can juggle five children and the vice presidency. This, more than anything, should push women, pro-life and pro-choice, away from the McCain-Palin ticket. It's one thing to oppose abortion on moral grounds. It's quite another to charge crime victims for their own forensic examinations. Such a policy is nothing short of outrageous.

In the summer of 1989, I was getting ready for my senior year of high school. The previous fall I was elected as senior Class President and the Student Activities President for my school and my guidance counselor arranged for me to attend a leadership camp. I thought I was going to nearby Massachussetts or perhaps New York. I had no idea they approved for me to attend a leadership camp in Estes Park, Colorado.
Aside from the altitude, that experience remains as one of the most powerful and awe-inspiring of my life. One of the many things that 9,000ft camp in the sky gave to me that summer was the concept of my future.
Towards the end of camp they had us sit down and write a letter. I'm thinking that you don't have to force me to write a letter home AND I will be there before the letter gets there. So my next thought is that this will be silly. Then our counselor tells us that we are writing a letter to ourselves.
Now, I thought it got instantly sillier.
We were to write a letter and it could be about our experiences at camp or goals for the future. Then there were 2 boxes in the front of the room that had large signs on them. One said 6 months and the other said 12 months. After our letter was complete we put our addresses on them and picked our box. The letter would be mailed out whichever time frame you selected by dropping your letter in a box.
The silliness started to wear off when I started writing the letter. I wrote about the foreign feeling of becomming close with people who were complete strangers a few weeks earlier. I wrote about standing in the chapel on the mountain and feeling an overwhelmed with spirit. I wrote of the feeling of being an individual and not being "her sister" or "his daughter" which is the territory of being the sixth of seven children and the absolute longing to be "her sister" and "his daughter" again. I wrote of the nervous anticipation of college and the many things that will occur in my senior year of high school.
I reflected on the total camp experience and noted my inklings of the future. I stood in front of both of the boxes and decided that 6 months would do it. I dropped that letter in the box...
...and totally forgot about it.
Then one day after the yearbook meeting and the student activities committee meeting and the prom committee meeting and after cheeleading practice I get home and there's a letter for me on the kitchen table. I had never heard of the company for the return address and didn't recognize the handwriting.
I take the letter and go in my room with every intention of finalizing my science fair project for the state competetion (The Effects of 1,3,7 Trimethlyxantine on the Central Nervous System - 2nd place winner, thank you) and I open the letter.
I was transported back to the mountain splendor of Camp Cheley and the amazing time I had. It was almost like a stranger wrote the letter but it was the letter I wrote to myself. It was absolutely powerful. I will never forget the feeling of reading that letter.
Flash forward nearly 20 years and I come across the book Dear Future Me: Hopes, Fears, Secrets Resolutions from one of my friends. It's a compilation of letters that people wrote to themselves on the website FutureMe.org. I read the entire compilation in a matter of hours and was completely fascinated.
What is FutureMe.org?
It's an online version of the letter I wrote at camp or the one you wrote as a freshman in high school. You can send a letter to the site and it will email it back to you at the time you specify. Some people only do it for a day or two but some others were 30 or 40 years into the future. You can even change your email address on their site if your email changes before your time is up.
You can set your letter to "Public Private" which means that other people can read your letter but NOT your information so they will never know it's you. You can also set it to "Private" and even the site creators won't read it.
I loved the book but one thing I wanted to know what what happened. One woman wrote about how she was quitting her job to go back to school and when she gets the letter to stop whining about not making as much money and to remember that there's $5 in the dictionary to go and get a happy meal and know that she's doing the right thing. Did she?
Another girl wrote her letter to be sent on her 21st birthday. Her letter was about how she shouldn't drink and if she thought she might want to drink on her 21st birthday she needs to remember how her father was when he drank... and what he did to her when he drank. How will she feel when she's 21?
What is our Project?
To experience the beauty of writing a letter to yourself BUT also the power to share what the results were or what your feelings were. So here's how:
1. Go to FutureMe.org and register
2. Write a letter to yourself. It can be about anything you wish. How you feel the day you wrote it, what your hopes or dreams are for the next six months, anything at all.
3. Send it on the FutureMe.org site and set the day to have it mailed back to you as: October 19, 2008.
4. On October 19th you will receive the email. Look it over and write down your thoughts about the letter and if what you thought about came to fruition or any updates you would like to share.
5. Send the original email with your additional updates to regina@reginasuniverse.com AND be sure to tell me if you want me to share that your letter is YOURS. If you don't want me to share your name I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT.
6. Regina's Universe will air an update show on October 20th where we will discuss the letters and get the updates.
Jay Patrikos, one of the site creators, has been in touch with me but he is out of the country right now. He did say that he was happy that we expressed an interest in the site.
Here are my questions:
Are you MORE likely to complete a goal if you KNOW that there's an update?
Do you think this is a positive way to remember how you felt about a certain event in your life?
If you decided that you want to write something AND share your name in October will you be more apt to complete it since you would like it to be publically recognized?

I also wanted to share with you the email I sent to Ms. Lola Noble who got a reading was happy with it and then decided to attack the chat room. I couldn't believe I had to ban someone from the show but I won't stand for what she was doing.

Ms. Noble, I don't understand how a fellow host could behave as unprofessionally and out of line as you were on my show last night. There was absolutely no need to conduct yourself in the way that you did. BlogTalkRadio has been a source of fun, creativity, and friendship for nearly a year. NEVER has anyone ever started such childish antics. You should be very embarassed. If you don't like a show just leave.
