Host Silvia Casabianca discusses with Sayer Ji if supplements and vitamins should be regulated. As wellness business becomes trillionaire, the pharmaceutical business enters in panic mode… Is Big Pharma's lobbying behind the FDA attempts at regulating supplements?
Back in the early 1990s, consumers staged a massive revolt that ended in Congress passing a law prohibiting the FDA from banning popular nutrients (as the agency had threatened to do). A loophole in the 1994 law, however, gave the FDA authority to regulate ingredients introduced after October 15, 1994. The FDA now intends to regulate what it calls "new dietary ingredients".
