The SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR LAW: How this Civil Law affects your Constitutional rights.

This show will focus on the Sexually Violent Predator Law which is a civil law enacted to control sex offenders from being released after they complete their prison sentence. Instead, this civil law deems them as dangerous to society and allows the state to hold them indefinitely, even though they have not committed another crime. This civil law has repercussions that affect everyone.

•             Detail the SVP Law and its far-reaching affect.

•             How a civil law becomes more powerful than criminal law.

•             What are the repercussions of allowing this type of law to exist?

To help us see a clear picture of this civil law and the affect it has caused in our state, we will be speaking with Charleen Steen. Charleen Steen is a noted author, she has written four books dealing with sex offender issues and treatment. One of these books, The Adult Relapse Prevention Workbook, is for sex offenders to follow a systematic process to gain awareness of their offending behavior. These books are used in prisons, treatment programs, and state hospitals. She was a criminal Attorney and Psychologist. She participated in the SVP Program as a state evaluator and as a defense evaluator for many years. She will discuss these issues and offer her insight into the reasons this process is not effective in changing sex-offending behavior.
