Zaki Baruti (Lavoy Reed) A Man of Passion, Commitment and Love For His People An outspoken political and social activist for over forty five years, 65 year old Zaki Baruti has consistently been in the forefront of the struggle for justice, equality and the liberation of our people here in this country and throughout the world. Based in St.Louis, MO, Zaki Baruti is the President/General of the Universal African Peoples Organization. The oldest of Columbus and Ann Reed’s ten children, Zaki was born on September 27, 1947 in Aberdeen, Mississippi and his given name was Lavoy Reed. However, he and his family actually lived in East St.Louis in a close knitted but poverty stricken area known as the ‘Southend’. In 1980, he adopted the cultural name Zaki Baruti which means ‘charitable teacher’. He is the father of three, Jeffrey, Candice, Takiyah: the grandfather of five, Jeffrey Jr., Xavier, Joshua, Tiyah, and Elijah and has been married to his wife, Brady, for thirty six years. Zaki has a Bachelor of Science Degree in History (1968) and a Master of Science Degree in Education Administration (1977) from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Illinois.
