In celebration of the 20th Anniversary Conference - Nov. 3 - 6, 2010 - of the National Association for Multicultural Education NAME our "Real Life" Radio Show will host several episodes featuring education reform luminaries that have been long time members of NAME. This segment features Dr. Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita -Language, Literacy & Culture- School of Education Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has received many awards for her advocacy and activism, including the 1997 Multicultural Educator of the Year Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education. Dr. Nieto has authored numerous books such as, "Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education," "The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities," "Language, Culture, and Teaching," and "What Keeps Teachers Going?" Our interview with Dr. Nieto will focus on the NAME Conference Theme "Empowering Children and Youth: Equity, Multicultural Responsive Teaching and Achievement Gaps."
