John Charles, father of a high school star, retired from California State University, Northridge as the Assistant Director of the Office of Student Development and International Programs. John supervised the international study abroad programs and domestic exchange programs. In addition, he coordinated and performed programming for an International Honor Society and foreign student advising. John contributed to positively changing lives of countless students by getting them to leave their comfort zone and live in another country for a year or visit another university within the US for a semester/year as part of a domestic exchange.
John’s has two favorites experiences. The first was escorting a group of 28 students to Xi'an, People's Republic of China, in 1989. They were in the country when Tiananmen Square broke out. Another highlight was a Fulbright grant to Germany for a month to network with colleagues in international education from a wide variety of institutions. As a parent, college is a top priority for him and his wife Ginger, and athletics comes in second. John remembers being active in sports during his own in high school years, but never played in college. John’s son, Christian, always seemed to gravitate toward anything with a ball at a very early age. John believes having a child at a late age in life (48) and retiring early has blessed him with the time to invest in his son's talent and to watch him grow and develop.
