Coqui Mexicano offers a Puerto Rican and Mexican mix in the Bronx

PRSUN Radio's guest at 9 p.m. tomorrow August 20 are the entrepreneurs behind Coqui Mexicano, a new restaurant and cultural spot in the South Bronx.

    Coqui Mexicano

is a jibaro style Mom & Pop shop (as well as residents of the hood), still luchando with all our might to get on our feet.

They serve tacos, tortas, cubanos, ensalada de pulpo, ensalada de chayote, various fresh homestyle desserts such as budin, coconetes, bizcochitos de guayaba y queso, tembleque & flan. They make empanadas de yuca to order. The menu is limited but Coqui Mexicano's focus is on fresh HOMESTYLE latino food and atmosphere (check out the online menu & other links @ www.letseat.at/CoquiMexica
no ). Currently, the shop has more Mexican food than Puerto Rican and offers a few typical groceries of a bodega for purchase as well.

There is also artesania for purchase in an effort to proudly support our peoples in any small way, the entrepreneurs say. Coqui Mexicano encourages local artists & organizations to use the business to promote their events (such as the Bronx Defenders and most recently local artist Luis Pagan).

Make sure to tune in at 9 p.m. tomorrow to learn more about Coqui Mexicano at www.blogtalkradio.com/prsunradio. Support small business.

PRSUN Radio chats with Manuel Hernandez Jr.

Manuel Hernandez Jr. is an author and English educator. He lives in Puerto Rico. Among his books is "A Birth of a Rican." With the new school year approaching, Hernandez will speak on English teaching on the island. He regularly writes essays related to education, Latino literature and the Puerto Rican experience for newspapers and websites, including the Puerto Rico Sun blog at www.prsun.blogspot.com.

  • Date / Time:

PRSUN Radio: Writer and educator Manuel Hernandez Jr.

Manuel Hernandez Jr. is my guest on PRSUN Radio at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

    Here's his bio:

Born and raised in Sleepy Hollow, New York. At eleven years of age, Manuel Hernandez' family moved to Puerto Rico. He finished grade school in Puerto Rico. He received his B.A. in English; secondary education at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus in 1986 and completed his M. A. in English at Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx, New York in 1994.

Hernandez has presented workshops, coordinated symposiums, conducted television interviews and moderated panels on the literature written by United States based Latino writers in Puerto Rico, the United States and
Mexico. He also writes commentary essays on education for several websites and newspapers in Puerto Rico and The United States. He published a textbook titled, Latino/a Literature in The English Classroom (Editorial Plaza Mayor, 2003). The book was nominated for Latino Book of The Year 2004. He also published a semi-auto-bio titled, The Birth of a Rican. The self-published narrative is in the index catalogs at Latino Studies at  Michigan State University and El Centro at Hunter College, CUNY, NY.

His vision is to promote Latino Literature to motivate teens to read and write. Having an encounter with Latino Literature will help teens (especially Latino teens) to improve their scores on city, national and statewide exams and will prepare them for further literary analysis.
Manuel Hernandez has shared his vision with NBC's Visiones segment and Cultura Viva at TuTv in Puerto Rico.

He is currently in professional staff development in the English department at the DE in Puerto Rico. He enjoys spending his free time with his wife Maria and his two boys, Jose Manuel and Josue Esteban.
