  ABOUT MARINA ORTIZ

   

   

  Born and raised in East Harlem/El Barrio and the South Bronx, Marina Ortiz has drawn from her background to craft an innovative, versatile body of work that includes: brand product and magazine collages, illustrations, poetry/spoken word, theatrical drama, broadcast/print journalism, digital photography, web-based graphic designs, and other forms of expression that highlight her experience as a stateside Puerto Rican woman. 

   

   

  PHOTOGRAPHY 

   

  A self-taught photographer, Marina is an avid documentarian of local cultural and political events and other aspects of the Nuyorican universe. Since 2004, she has maintained an extensive online catalogue heralding significant cultural events and honoring community leaders and artists. 

   

  Her work is regularly featured on popular websites such as her own virtualboricua.org and eastharlempreservation.org and frequently used in promotional flyers, brochures and newsletters. Her photographs have also been published in local newspapers. 

   

  As Marina continues to explore digital photography, she has found expression in detailing differences between historic and mainstream art and design. Her more recent works often contrast historical landmarks such as local firehouses, prisons, courthouses, schools, libraries, and churches with contemporary corporate architecture.  

   

  Marina is presently planning a number of exhibits, including El Barrio: Canvas al Fresco, The People’s Island, Gated Communities, and The Sky’s the Limit. 

  
  

  In addition to her creative work, Marina Ortiz is a Community and Environmental Preservationist 

  
  

  As Founder and President of East Harlem Preservation, Marina has worked to address environmental and healthy food inequities, large-scale commercial developments, and affordable housing and displacement issues in East Harlem/El Barrio, New York City. 

  In 2007, Marina co-authored a 30-minute video and research report, "East Harlem Focus: A Community Facing Transition," documenting the neighborhood’s rapid and transformative change. She continues to produce reports on the impact of neighborhood gentrification on social networking sites such as “East Harlem Voices.” 

  In 2008, Marina was the plaintiff in a lawsuit that successfully challenged the privatization of public parkland on Randall’s Island. She continues to monitor recent attempts to circumvent ULURP and other legal requirements intended to provide out- of-district private schools with long-term control over public ball fields during prime, after-school hours. 

  Marina regularly presents testimony on such environmental issues at NYC Council hearings and has recently partnered with other environmental advocates to address the health risks of artificial turf in public parks.

  EDUCATION
