About my guests Iris Morales and Lenina Nadal

Iris Morales is an educator, activist, and media producer whose life-long activism has focused on human rights. She began her community work as a tenant organizer in New York City’s low-income neighborhoods and became a media activist as a way to reach broader constituencies and, especially, young Latin@s in the struggle for social justice. She is the producer, writer and co-director of the documentary !Palante, Siempre Palante! the Young Lords, which was broadcast on national public television and continues to be widely screened by students and community audiences. Today, as an educator and producer of short films and multi-media projects, her work addresses contemporary issues. Recent short films  and web projects include: “Barrio Memories,” “Shekere Journey,” “COINTELPRO: I guess I’ll never know,”“Changing Latino NY” and “Immigrant Detention:  A Growing US Industry.” Ms. Morales' most current project is US-PuertoRicans.org, a multi-media site dedicated to the Puerto Rican Diaspora. It features articles, poetry, announcements, blogs about arts and politics, maps, short videos, history and a directory of web resources. Inspired by the 2003 report  that more Puerto Ricans live in the United States than in Puerto Rico, the site is a place for learning, action and solidarity across geographic and generational lines.  Its goal is to build community."

Lenina Nadal is a Suburican multi-media artist , poet, activist, and writer. She has an MFA from the Integrated Media Arts Program at Hunter College.  Performing Profound (www.performingprofound.com) was her thesis project and features an interactive video history of Puerto Rican spoken word in the diaspora. Currently, she is a contributing writer for Ms. Morales site,  www.us-puertoricans.org and is the coordinator of the website for the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, www.northwestbronx.org. She has had her poetry and articles published in several websites, and the  anthologies Bum Rush the Page by Def Poetry Jam, and In Defense of Mumia.  In 2004, she won 1st prize for Best Article in the Arts from the Independent Press Association for an article celebrating the work of Pedro Pietri.  In 2005, Lenina participated in the  Marrakesh Tribeca Filmmakers Exchange. Her two short films produced in  Morocco were featured in the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival. Her other video art has been featured in Hunter College’s Media Ballistics: Digital and Film Art Symposium. She is a proud founding member of the Student Liberation Action Movement, an activist group for students in the City University of New York.  She continues her commitment to social justice by working in development and communications at the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition.
