Coming soon: Mia Roman Hernandez of Art by Mia on PRSUN Radio

PRSUN Radio's upcoming show will feature artist Mia Hernandez. The show will be at 9 p.m. March 4.

    Here is Mia's artist statement:

    Artist Statement

MIA ROMAN HERNANDEZ – Art By Mia

I am a Brooklyn born Latina of Puerto Rican descent. A painter, poet and mixed media artist and blessed with the best ofboth worlds. With culture and family values being first and foremost I learnedthe discipline and appreciation of life.

It was with my family that I first learned to appreciate the importance of an artistic community. Being surrounded by so many creative people provided me with a nurturing artistic environment that encouraged me to explore and learn without boundaries.

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY taught me the value of diversity but my Mom taught me how to fight the battles of life and survive the wars. She is my Goddess and Warrior. Trips to the park with her were excursions and the clouds were not just clouds but shapes and forms with endless possibilities. She taught us to see things with an open mind and to never be afraid to try new things. My Grandfather a self taught artist painted into his late eighties and always had an instrument in his hand ready for his next creation. My family and life experience is what leads my hand and nourishes my creativity. The themes and concerns of the urban Latino population have been a primary inspiration to me and are reflected in many of my sketches and paintings.

I was blessed to have had the opportunity to travel through Europe and the Caribbean.During my travels I have visited the worlds most treasured pieces in history like … the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Michael Angelo’s David, The Sistine Chapel,Venus Di Milo and to view art by Obed Gomez, Elizabeth Baez, Frida Kahlo, Rafael Tufino, Goya, and so much more.

Many artists have played a big role in inspiring me like, Frida Kahlo and Rafael Tufino.I enjoy experimenting with various mixed mediums, acrylic and oil paint, fabric, wood, metal, ceramics, canvas, Photography and anything nature creates. My favorite subjects to paint are of various African and Latino cultures, emotions and spirituality. My paintings are an expression of heart and personal truth, a record of my experiences and ideas. Through color, shapes, realism and surrealism I have been able to express myself visually. My emotions, love and passion for my ancestral past and traditions are colorfully conveyed in my art.

Art for me is a spiritual practice. I never go into it with an agenda. I play my music and every experience is a new journey.

If I had to sum up my inspirations into one word it would be “Life”. The driving force behind my work is very personal. It is an influence of family, culture and a deep sense of spirituality.
