An avid sports fan and quilter, Kate was sparked with the idea to make and donate quilts representing the Boston Red Sox to the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Kate realized how much of an impact sports teams and their players have on these children.  A visit from a player can change the mood of a child for an entire day and make him or her forget, even if only for a short while, that they have cancer. I n her opinion, there was no better way to personally connect with these children than to give them a gift of their beloved sports team. Kate decided to broaden her idea to extend the cause to not only cancer patients, but children in need – being medical, social or mental health need. She researched other teams like the Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots, and learned of other programs for children in need such as homelessness and children suffering from drug and physical abuse. Continuing in that vein, Malia is now a Fellow at M.I.T.’s Community Innovator’s Lab, where she is guest lecturing and initiating a project called The Urban Lab. Through the use of the latest technology, the vision of the Urban Lab is to increase the efficiency of outreach and organizing by finding ways to keep communities connected to community-based organizations and to each other. Most recently, Malia founded The Gathering for Justice, a growing multi-cultural non-violent organization envisioned and championed by Harry Belafonte represented in 13 regions throughout the United States. The Gathering trains thousands of current and former street gang members in non-violent direct action based on the practices of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Malia’s work with The Gathering epitomizes her broad insight into coalition building, civic engagement, and community organizing where she bridges the gap between government institutions, emerging leaders, and at risk youth in inner cities throughout the country. A graduate of Boston’s Emerson College, Malia’s work first came to national attention when her coalition building and community organizing savvy formed the basis for Boston Vote. One year later. 1999 Boston Vote became Mass Vote. Katie is charged currently with building partnerships and fundraising sources to enable growth for Jumpstart in the New York area as the Development Manager for that region. However, her history with Jumpstart dates back to her early experiences as a Corps member and Volunteer Coordinator, dedicating over 600 hours of service with Jumpstart during her undergraduate career. After graduation, Katie dedicated a year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America), to the organization that inspired her enthusiasm for service, Jumpstart. Through this service opportunity, Katie was able to translate the lessons she learned as a Corps member and Volunteer Coordinator to help the organization continue to grow and learn. She was honored as a recipient of American Eagle’s Spirit of Service Award and named a panelist for the ServiceNation Summit, both in 2008, as a result of her deep commitment to service and Jumpstart’s mission. Katie was asked to stay with Jumpstart after her term of VISTA service as the Special Initiatives Fellow to support strategic and group projects within the national organization. In that role, she supported the president and Board of Directors as well as other key projects, including the five-year strategic planning process and implementation. Katie is a graduate of Tufts University with concentrations in Clinical Psychology and Spanish.00:45:00Mark McCurdynoAmeriCorps,Nonprofit,Jobs,Social Imapct,Nonprofit CareersToday I will be interviewing Katie Johnson on how she was able to land her dream job through volunteering. Learn why and how she started her own nonprofit. Here is some background on Veronica, but you will have to tune in to learn more. It was while president of Spelman’s S.I.F.E team as a sophomore in college that Veronica discovered she had an ability and passion for helping children through the development of engaging and informative educational programs; and after losing a cousin to gun violence, her calling became clearer. Upon graduating from Spelman College she self-published The Advent of Planet Martyr: An Innovative Social Commentary, a book where she uses prose and poetry to address social issues. Included in the book is Ancestors Inc., a play Veronica wrote as a vehicle to educate Black American youth about their ancestors and how many of their ancestors used entrepreneurship to improve not only their lives, but also the lives of others. Since graduating from Babson College’s F.W. Olin School of Business, Veronica has been building her organization, Boxxout Enterprises—using out-of-the-box thinking to create and implement innovative educational programs that teach 21st Century Skills to youth residing in urban, low-income communities. 00:45:00Mark McCurdynoCareer,Professional Development,Nonprofit,Jobs,Social ImpactJoin us as I interview Veronica Chapman, President of www.boxxout.org.
