Join Project Empowerment with guest Joan Sharp as we discuss myths about child abuse and neglect and provide listeners with a way to think about the issue that opens up some doors for action, which would include some specific examples of what’s working. ... Joan Sharp is a national consultant, served by gubernatorial appointment as the executive director of Washington State’s child abuse and neglect prevention agency, the Council for Children & Families, which is also the Prevent Child Abuse America chapter for Washington State. During her nine years there, Joan led major new initiatives including establishment of the state’s evidence based home visiting system, the Strengthening Families Washington collaboration, and a statewide postpartum depression awareness campaign. She now consults with the Washington DC-based Center for the Study of Social Policy, the national home for the Strengthening Families initiative, and with the National Alliance of Children’s Trust Funds, a membership organization for child abuse and neglect prevention agencies in states across the country. After an early career in journalism, Joan served as executive director of a rural early-childhood-focused family support and early learning center and director of a regional United Way Success by 6 initiative. Formerly a small town city council member, Joan holds an Executive Master’s degree in Non-Profit Leadership from Seattle University and a BA in English from the University of Washington. She lives in Seattle. The web link for the Council for Children & Families is http://www.ccf.wa.gov/ You may also be interested in: Strengthening Families http://www.strengtheningfamilies.net/
