Voting Power & The Prison Nation: Using What We Have To Get What We Want (& Need)

(Willingboro, NJ) - December 15, 2007 – Prison Nation Radio (PNR): Our Point of View will conduct the second in a series of scheduled live broadcast/community forums from the Willingboro Public Library (220 Willingboro Blvd,
Willingboro, NJ 08046) on Saturday January 5, 2008 at 10:30 AM. The title of the program is ”Voting Power & The Prison Nation: Using What We Have To Get What We Want (& Need)”. The Public is invited. The program can also be accessed on the Internet at www.Jointfx.com.

“Every day in NJ and around the country legislation is either pending, being proposed or being passed that is intended to publicly identify, restrict, classify, deny, exclude and control formerly incarcerated people”, says Michael B. Jackson, Creator/Producer/Host of PNR. “The laws are intended to protect the public from dangerous individuals, but they also tend to negatively impact the lives, rights and privacy of all FIP. Including those who have proven over decades since their convictions to be honest and productive citizens with families to consider.”

Jackson, who is formerly incarcerated, believes that if just twenty-five percent of the eligible FIP in New Jersey were registered, voting and active in the political process the sheer numbers would persuade lawmakers to look closer at laws potential for collateral damage to the lives and futures of hundreds-of-thousands of people who don’t deserve it. As an example he refers to ”needless and senseless” laws already on the books in NJ that prohibits anyone with a criminal conviction from getting housing, educational opportunities and jobs and/or licenses in many of the employment areas once open and popular for FIP, such as security, airports, barbering, cosmetology, port/dock labor and certain manufacturing and sales/retail industries – thus shrinking the already shallow job pool for FIP that much smaller.

“I, as do most formerly incarcerated people, recognize and appreciate the need to monitor and restrict certain individuals in certain situations, ” explained Jackson. “However, many of the laws are being unfairly applied across the board to include anyone and everyone with a past conviction. There is no regard to circumstances, such as when a conviction occurred or what an individual may have achieved and contributed to society since then.

Michael B. Jackson is the Publisher and Author of three books; "How to Do Good After Prison: A Handbook for Successful Reentry," "How to Love & Inspire Your Man After Prison," and "Como Cumplir Con Tus Obligaciones Al Salir De La Prision: Guia practica para una vida mejor."

Those who cannot attend can call in, email or join the live chat room during the broadcast. Letters can be sent to mail: PMB 104, Postnet, 621 Beverly-Rancocas Rd, Willingboro, NJ 08046.
