In August cosPRIDE was fed up. Situated five blocks from the headquarters of the United States Olympic Committee, cosPRIDE’s mission is: To connect, support and empower the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region to achieve civil and social equality while advocating for LGBT interests and inspiring a sense of community.
We believe the rights of our athletes, a large number of whom live in our state and at our city’s U.S. Olympic Training Center, are being repressed. Specifically, their inability because of their Olympic Team status to support the LGBT community. We know that our athletes may be arrested and expelled from the Games if they outwardly support LGBT rights. This compelled us to stand up for their rights and, more importantly, for the rights of our gay Russian brothers and sisters. And, so, OK2BGay.org was born. Our mission is to defend the basic human right to live and love openly and Russia is currently ground zero.
We know our gay Russian brothers and sisters are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly. Worse, they are being silenced, beaten and jailed. The “democratically” elected government of Russia earlier this year passed two anti-gay laws: one banning adoption by gays and one banning “gay propaganda.” We call for the repeal of these laws through international pressure.
Our first special guest will be Julianne Howell, the creator of the above petition. This petition and movement is gaining momentum and we are still months away from the Winter Olympics. Julianne Howell has been talking a great deal about her project and this issues. More Details
