Earthquakes represent the largest single potential for casualties and damage from a natural hazard facing this country and others around the world. The N.E..R.P.(National Eartquake Hazards Reduction Program) is the Federal Government's approach to addressing earthquake risks, involving the closely coordinated efforts of four Federal agencies-FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), USGS (United States Geological Survey), NSF (National Science Foundation), NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology. We will examine the pitfalls and common mistakes that are usually undertaken when mitigation planning is not instituted.
