When did God get betrothed? Seems an odd question, doesn't it? After all, there is no chapter and verse to point to and say, "Aha! This is when He popped the question."

Many people aren't comfortable with the whole idea of God being married and consider this to be a literary term-not meant to be taken literally. But although He isn't married in the same sense that you and your spouse are, neither is the imagery of God's marriage to His people just distant allegory. It is a true and poignant portrait of our maker-redeemer as a faithful and compassionate husband whose love for His Bride models what true love can be.

God knows how this all works because He not only created the marriage relationship, but He also gave us an exampe of it in His own marriage to His people. It is in this way that we can come to understand how marriage is meant to work: God Himself has painted the picture for us.
