As the population ages, there is often degeneration of the macula of the eye, the portion of the retina that is responsible for finely-focused vision, like reading.  This causes great distress to people who may lose their ability to read the newspaper or do fine sewing.

Dr. Pravin U. Dugel of Retinal Consultants of Arizona speaks with Joyce concerning prevention and treatment of AMD.

Dr. Dugel was the Chief Resident Supervisor at the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California until he joined Retinal Consultants of Az, Ltd. in July 1994. He has been co-investigator in National Eye Institute research studies and in several Multicenter Studies. Dr. Dugel has authored more than thirty papers and book chapters and is the first person to receive both the Heed Foundation Fellowship Award and the Ronald G. Michels Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellowhip Award.
