UN economists identified malaria as one of the top four causes of poverty. Every year it kills > 3 million people and is estimated to cost the African economy $30 billion per year (more than 500 million per year get malaria). Professor Jeffrey Sachs (read the End of Poverty) believes ending malaria is the most important priority in lifting Africa out of poverty. "Comprehensive malaria control in Africa is achievable by 2010 at the minimal cost of US $3 billion per year. Millions of lives can be saved, and Africa will be given vital help in escaping from the vicious cycle of poverty and disease that continues to grip the continent by saving the $30 billion per year that it loses in productivity and medical costs every year.
