This week, Zhena is here to talk about her success with her sustainable award winning brand of pure organic tea that has turned into the fastest growing company on the gold coast: Zhena’s Gypsy Tea. In 2000, Zhena’s son Sage was born with a severe health defect. Barely making ends meet, and with no health insurance to cover Sage’s mounting medical costs, Zhena was faced with a serious challenge. Determined to earn the income necessary to support the needs of her son she used her degree in aromatherapy, love of tea and a small collection of money from friends and family to produce and start selling tea out of a cart on California street corners. Believing that selling her tins of tea could alter fate, Zhena became a purveyor of hope and the founder of Gypsy Tea. Today Sage is a healthy, energetic boy and the company has become more than just a product. Zhena’s Gypsy Tea doesn’t just market products, it markets meaning. These teas are made with a commitment to social responsibility, sustainability and the well-being of others. Apart from dedicating her company to blending her teas with the finest, highest grade of natural oils, herbs, fruits, and organic leaves, Zhena has committed her company to green practices. These include focusing on how the ingredients in her products are grown, the re-usable packaging that is used, even the tea bags play a role in promoting social good.

    Capitalism 3.0: Reclaiming the Commons

This week on Planet Good Radio, Peter Barnes, co-founder and former President of Working Assets joins us to talk about the ideas in his book, “Capitalism 3.0.” Peter is a business man in a quandry — a firm believer in free markets, he’s also convinced that our current version of capitalism is pushing nature ever closer to collapse — and continuing to widen the already huge gap between rich and poor. But he’s no fan of government either. So he came up with what he thinks is a better idea: create an independent “common wealth” sector to protect shared assets like air and water, and maybe even cultures and communities. Secure these assets in a trust that belongs to everyone, he writes in “Capitalism 3.0,” and profit-making corporations couldn’t wantonly gobble them up. Plus, everybody would benefit equally from their use. At present Peter is a senior fellow at the Tomales Bay Institute in Point Reyes Station, California. He earned a B.A. in history from Harvard and an M.A. in government from Georgetown. Peter began his career as a reporter on The Lowell (Mass.) Sun, and was subsequently a Washington correspondent for Newsweek and west coast correspondent for The New Republic. In 1976 he co-founded a solar energy company in San Francisco, and in 1983 he co-founded Working Assets Money Fund. He subsequently served as president of Working Assets Long Distance. In 1995 he was named Socially Responsible Entrepreneur of the Year for Northern California. He has served on numerous boards of directors, including the National Cooperative Bank, the California State Assistance Fund for Energy, the California Solar Industry Association, Businesses for Social Responsibility, Techmar, Redefining Progress, the Family Violence Prevention Fund, Public Media Center, Greenpeace International, the California Tax Reform Association, and the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Values Sell: Transforming Purpose into Profit

Joining us this week on Planet Good Radio are award-winning entrepreneur Nadine A. Thompson and coauthor Angela Soper. The two will discuss the principles of their new book “Values Sell: Transforming Purpose into Profit through Creative Sales and Distribution Strategies.” Sales and distribution are the lifeblood of any business and socially responsible businesses are no different. To make a difference in the world, a business has to make its product or service available and get the public to buy it. But how can one compete with businesses for which the bottom line is the only measure of success? You need to get creative! Angela Soper is a writer, media consultant and filmmaker. She has also written for The Washington Post and People magazine and for nine years served as the Creative Director/Screenwriter for one of the world’s leading direct selling companies. She is co-producer/co-writer of Courthouse Girls of Farmland, an award winning documentary that has screened at film festivals throughout the United States, in Canada and in Australia. Nadine Thompson is the Co-Founder and former President and CEO of Warm Spirit, a unique direct-sales company that produced a comprehensive collection of nature-based beauty and wellness products. The unique creations were supplied to customers through a nationwide network of more than 30,000 independent consultants. The company transformed the face of the direct sales and network marketing industry by providing an opportunity for wealth-building and financial freedom that had not always been accessible for women—and even less so for the African-American community. Today, Thompson is taking her vision and empowerment acumen to another level, and has moved on from Warm Spirit to establish Nadine Thompson Enterprises, including her new retail venture, Soul Purpose Lifestyle Company – an innovative direct selling company that launched in January, 2008.
