A quick look at sporting events based on a female perspective

Greeting Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is your Pink Sports Bulletin for Wednesday, May 21, 2008:
In the NBA – The Lakers took no prisoners last Friday night; they went into hostile territory and completed their mission to close out their series by winning game 6 in Utah. Note to Carlos Boozer and the rest of the Utah Jazz, thank you gentlemen for playing and enjoy watching the rest of the playoffs on television.
The San Antonio Spurs won game 7 of their series Monday night, beating the New Orleans Hornets, 91-82. The fundamentally boring, Tim Duncan posted a double-double, 16 points and 14 rebounds. Other notable contributors were Spurs guards, Manu Ginobili with 26 points and Tony Parker who finished with 17 points.
A bit of advice for the San Antonio Spurs, make your trip to Los Angeles worth while, take in a show and grab a plate at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles because on Wednesday night, Kobe and Lakers are going to run all over you.
Game 1 of Lakers vs. Spurs takes place this evening at 9pm (EST.) on TNT.
In game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics defeated the Detroit Pistons, 88-79. Last night, the Celtics played like the #1 defensive team in the league.
Former NBA star and TNT sportscaster, Charles Barkley is facing felony charges for failing to pay a $400,000 gambling debt to a Las Vegas casino. What’s up Chuck, paying all that alimony got you down? Note to self, only gamble what you can afford to loose!
Around Major League Baseball– Struggles continue in New York, the over paid Yankees are last in the (AL) eastern standings and their neighbors across the bridge are not much better. The Mets are merely one game above .500 and sit in the 3rd spot of the (NL) east.
Talks continue around Cincinnati Reds outfielder, Ken Griffey, Jr. I hope Griffey gets what he deserves; a sweet contract which includes braces and a trade to a team that is not satisfied with being last in their conference.
On the Green, LPGA superstar, Annika Sorenstam announced her proposed retirement. Although rain cancelled the second round at the Sybase classic, Sorenstam is looking to go out with a bang, she is currently in a three way tie for first place.
Tiger Woods is recovering well from his knee surgery and is back putting and chipping on the green. Woods says he plans to compete in the U.S. Open which will take place June 12-15. Sadly, for the other men on the PGA tour, an 80% Tiger Woods is better than their 100% any day of the week.
Shame in the NFL – The jig is up in New England; the wholesome image of the Patriots has been tainted with the news of cheating. Former team camera operator, Matt Walsh admitted to taping opposing teams during critical games.
Now that the Patriots have their boxers around their ankles, coach Bill Belichick is finally acknowledging his “mistake.” Mistake, that’s cute coach but, a mistake is when you add too much salt to your favorite recipe or when a lady wears a new pair of heels to the county fair. Taping another team’s plays or cues is cheating even in the Clinton household.
Although coach Belichick gave a lengthy explanation, his rational was not accepted by the NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodall. Goodall fined coach Belichick $500,000 and docked the Patriots $250,000 plus its first round draft pick.
My Grandmother always told me, cheaters never prosper; and most still remember Superbowl 2008, the highly favored Patriots lost in a huge upset against the Giants.
Now in TENNIS – On Wednesday of last week, Justine Henin retired at the age of 25. At the time of her announcement, Henin was the #1 ranked player on the WTA tour. With the departure of Henin, Maria Sharapova will automatically take over the #1 ranking.
Ranking aside, Serena (#6) and Venus (#9) Williams are still a force to be reckoned with. Both ladies moved forward and advanced to the 4th round of international play in Italy. Unfortunately, Serena had to forfeit her quarterfinal match due to back problems.
Don’t start placing your bets on Sharapova yet, people in the Williams camp report that Serena is doing well and still plans to compete at the French Open in Roland Garros from May 25-June 8. So, to the citizens of France, get ready, get ready, the Williams sisters are coming to town and I am sure they will be flashy and bejeweled.
Bouncing over to the WNBA – Candace Parker of the Los Angles Sparks stepped into her professional shoes with ease. Parker broke a league record by scoring 34 points in her debut game against the Phoenix Mercury.
Great news for young girls around the United States, professional women’s basketball is alive and well. Opening night posted 6 sellouts of the 8 games played. Now, all the league needs to do is convince Tina Thompson to stop wearing that gaudy lipstick.
In closing, a little something for the grown and sexy from the purple crusader, Prince…”if we can’t make babies, may be we can make some time…whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!”
PEACE,
L.
