Mary Jo Putney was born in Upstate New York with a reading addiction, a condition for which there is no known cure. Writing is the constant that defines me--it takes me out of the "here and now" and allows me to drift freely in worlds of fantasy where I am in complete control of my characters and their destinies...at least, that is, until they take over the stories. My current series from Kensington Publishing, Wolf Tales, is taking me in directions I never imagined and has opened up my own rather mundane world to that of the Chanku. These amazingly sensual shapeshifters started out as mythical creatures of my own creation, but have long since moved out of the realm of fantasy and into a reality I never imagined.Chanku history:
In “real life,” there is a species of Tibetan wolf called Canis lupus laniger, known locally as “Chanku.” This little bit of trivia was the impetus for my entire series of shapeshifters.
The Chanku of my series are the remnants of an ancient race of shapeshifters who lived on the Tibetan steppe. They don’t know if they evolved there or were possibly planted by some alien race, but they are not the werewolves of myth and legend. They are shapeshifters who are descendents of the first of their breed. They co-existed with early humans in the Himalayas , long before the advent of villages and towns, before man had begun to settle in communities. Legend calls them Chanku, but they no longer exist as the people they once were.
The Chanku, like the fabled werewolves, have the power to shift their bodies from human to wolf and back again, but they don’t need a full moon or any type of spell, nor must they remain under cover of darkness. It’s all based on a small part of the brain near the hypothalamus, an extension of that organ that exists only in the Chanku, an insignificant bit of flesh that, without certain nutrients, loses its ability to function.
The nutrients they require come from the grasses common to the area now Tibet, that have the ability to draw certain nutrients from the soil in precise percentages—nutrients perfectly formulated to stimulate this small organ. It, in turn, exerts influence on the functions in the body needed to shift.
At some point in time, their food supply ran low. Unwilling to feed on humans, the remaining Chanku dispersed throughout Europe and many eventually came to America. However, once away from their homeland, without the nutrients, they lost their ability to shift. They became, instead, almost entirely human. Under extreme stress, a Chanku who has not had the nutrients, can shift, but it’s generally so traumatic, they don’t recall the incident. Two different groups have learned the secret of their genetic abilities and have created a supplement that contains the right nutrients which allows a genetically predisposed individual to eventually be able to shift. That is the basis of my series as they find new “undiscovered” Chanku and bring them into the packs.
The Chanku are a polyamorous race. They mate for life, but they share their mates within the pack. The alpha male rules by physical domination when necessary, but it’s usually the female who leads the pack, whether in human or wolven form. It’s her decision as to whom she will take for sexual pleasure, whether it be only one or all the males. Often the women have sexual encounters with other females in their group, though they almost always mate with one of the opposite sex. Same with the men. Chanku females can only be impregnated while in wolf form, and then they can choose when to reproduce. They are a highly sexed race with a powerful need to mate whenever they’ve shifted, and they’re not at all particular about their partners, though once Chanku, they never search for sexual partners outside their own species. Since they are impervious to all human disease, there is little fear from sex.
They have some cool abilities: telepathy which can allow them, in extreme situations, to communicate over vast distances and also makes the sex pretty spectacular. They have the ability to absorb another’s pain in order to give comfort, faster healing when they shift, and all the senses of the wolf as well as their human intelligence, no matter what form they’re in.
