  • Wendy Lincoln, founder of Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue

    in Pets

We are a network of volunteers who do rabbit rescue, centered in Baton Rouge, LA, and serving LA, MS, and occasionally other states. We are a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Our mission is to rescue & find loving homes for rabbits, as well as educate and serve our community so that all rabbits in our area live happy, healthy lives with their families.
Our rabbits for adoption come from all walks of life. Often they are a child’s pet, and the young caretaker loses interest, sometimes for a new pet, or especially if a young bunny is purchased and it unknowingly becomes an “unruly teenager” a few months later. Others come from animal control, are found wandering neighborhoods after being “set free” by people who no longer wanted them, or even drop-offs at pet stores. A few months after Easter, we often receive entire "unexpected litters" from Easter Rabbits bought without prior research. However, Easter is definitely not the only time we receive rabbits.
Sadly, few rabbits that become unwanted end up in rescue. Most often they are given away to another unprepared home, and the rabbit goes through the cycle again. Others are let loose, left to find palatable grasses, avoid dogs and cars, and suffer from mites, fleas, heat, and rain. Rabbits are not as common of a pet as a cat or dog, and are much less understood as a family pet. They are often picked up at a pet store, put in a cage, and no questions are asked. Others are raised as livestock, being left outdoors and not socialized, and sit all alone day after day. Neither situation makes a happy pet, or a happy family! This is where our education mission comes in.

  • Renee King-Sonnen, founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary

    in Pets

Renee's is transitioning into a very edgy immersion into veganism.  Renee is forever changed by her decision. It's been a long time coming, and being married to her husband that she loves and respects dearly is what catapulted her over the edge of "no return"!  She lives on a 96 acre ranch with him. She was transplanted from suburbia to the ranch 6 years ago where she fell in love with all the critters....kinda like Elly Mae Clampett.  Renee named them all and loved everyone - she'd go out and spend time with them, dance around them - sing to them and talk to them.
Then they started being trailered up to go to the sale barn, and the experience of watching them leave, the mamas wailing for a week and the absense of their souls in the pasture haunted Renee. This past Halloween, while at her mother in laws, Renee found myself saying no to anything with meat in it. She'd been vegetarian in the past and even tried a raw diet for several months, but never had the compassion connection until she LIVED IT!  She loves those animals - she sees their souls, and they see hers.  Renee can tell they are looking at her out of the corner of their eye. Renee says they can feel our motives.

Susan has over 40 years experience in dealing with animals from German Shepherds to Great Danes and Thoroughbreds to Quarter Horses. She has always had an “intuitive” feel for her animals and often seemed to just “know” things about them. Susan belonged to the Gold Creek Cavalry where she and her horse participated in drills, parades camp outs and trail rides. She later showed horses on the “A” Hunter/Jumper circuit in the Adult Amateur and Amateur Owner divisions.. Riding with such luminaries as Brad Laird and John Bauman. She has also successfully shown German Shepherd dogs in the confirmation show ring.
She began this particular journey when she lost her mare to laminitis.a very painful disease of the hoof. Another of her horses was misdiagnosed with Insulin Resistance much like diabetes in humans Over the next few years and many unproductive vet bills, it was discovered that he did not have this disease at all. Having him on a good nutritious diet, lots of turnout, proper exercise, body and energy work were the keys to keeping him healthy and happy. Susan was drawn to learning much more about nutrition both for animals and people.
Throughout her life, Susan has never been without an animal of some sort. At one point she owned 12 horses. Working in the painting and construction industry was the means of supporting all her animals. Susan is finally realizing her lifelong dream of being able to work directly with animals in a wonderful and unique way.
