My guest today is a geneticist, but he doens't look for disease markers. Fredric Abramson of Alpha-Genics wants to help us use that information to better our lives. Genetic mapping can provide invaluable information to help you navigate the world and society. If you know your child is preprogrammed to have trouble learning from his mistakes, you stop thinking he's stupid and find ways to help him learn. If you know you are preprogrammed for endurance performance, not spriting, maybe you'll work on a 10K, not the 400 yard dash.
And consider this: What if all these conditions we say work against us and must be muted, actually have an evolutionary purpose? Did you know that 50% of CEOs have bipolar syndrome? That can't be a coincidence. How can genetic testing show us how to use what we've got?
Genetics is most definitely not destiny. But if you work with your genetic predispositions, maybe you'll spend less time stumbling around blind. And maybe if you have the BRCA gene, prophylactic surgery is not your only option.
