Parent's PerspectiveParents this is a question I believe we should take serious and put some real consideration behind it.  Although the stigma of a dumb jock is a conversation of the past.  Many of our young men and ladies are still looked at as being less than the superior students they are.  Anytime they can hold down their great academic performance in the classroom and produce exceptional on the court or the field of play, we have to be talking about a superior human.  Their academic studies are being monitored closer than the average student's grades.  Social issues are in their face more now than it ever has been.  With the introduction of social media and its various outlets, our children can not avoid from being bombarded by today's social issues.   Our children who are heavily involved in sports are the leaders of tomorrow.  From the youngest one in middle school to the oldest one playing professionally.  Their platform must be developed to identify and be prepared to address areas of concern, from a positive perspective.  I recently had the opportunity to watch a panel discussion, which was held at San Jose State University it addressed a very real topic of "Sport, Activism, and Social Change".  On this panel were noted athletes such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA HOF, six-time league MVP, Jim Brown, NFL HOF, three-time league MVP, Anquan Boldin, 2015 NFL Man of the Year, Danielle Slaton, 2000 Olympics silver medalist, soccer, Tommie Smith, 1968 Olympics gold medalist, 200 meters, Takeo Spikes, two-time NFL All-Pro, and Chris Webber, five-time NBA All-Star  01:01:00ParentCoachingParentnoparents,sports,children,social media,SportSocial Issues And AthletesWhat Should Your Athlete's Initial Correspondence to A Coach Look Likehttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2017/02/06/what-should-your-athletes-initial-correspondence-to-a-coach-look-likeSportshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2017/02/06/what-should-your-athletes-initial-correspondence-to-a-coach-look-like/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2017/02/06/what-should-your-athletes-initial-correspondence-to-a-coach-look-likeMon, 06 Feb 2017 02:30:00 GMTWhat Should Your Athlete's Initial Correspondence to A Coach Look LikeParents how many time have we wondered how to initiate contact with a college coach?  What are some of the things we should address as it pertains to our child?  Should we put in there he has this special blanket he hold on to for security reasons?  Should we address that he will only where the latest footwear?  Should we tell the coach about his reform school issues?  Is this the time to talk about his/her reliability to stay on task and do chores?  What value to we and should they address in their initial correspondence to a potential college coach?  This is what we will discuss tonight on the Parents Coaching Parents Network; “Building An Athletic Resume”.  We will highlight a few key points for various sports to include academic information.  We will highlight football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and much more ……. 01:01:00ParentCoachingParentnoSports,Parents,Correspondence,AthletesAthletic ResumeWhat You Don't Know About Athletic Recruiting ...... From A Parent's PerspectiveDoes sports have the only gift our children benefit from?  Student-athletes at the Division II level are a unique population that face added stress outside of the norm compared to their non-athlete counterparts. Many student-athletes often struggle when attempting to juggle their commitment and desire to excel in their sport of play with the ability to succeed in the classroom. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has placed a large emphasis on student-athlete academics by putting such rules as the Progress-Towards-Degree in place. This rule ensures student-athletes are moving towards graduation during their time as a student-athlete.  With rules such as the Progress-Towards-Degree Universities have employed compliance coordinators whose job is to make sure all student-athletes at their University comply with NCAA ruling to remain eligible for play. Join us for this SPECIAL episode as we host our guest from the "Gifted" children's community.  I believe you want to listen in on this conversation as our guest has some valuable tools she will share with everyone on how we can best support and guide our "Gifted & Talented" student/athletes.   00:59:00ParentCoachingParentnoGifted,Talented,children,Athletes,ParentsTalented and Gifted Student-AthletesParents and Sports Pt. Abusive Coaching in College Sports, WHY?Wow parents an amazing thing happen to me over the past week.  I had an opportunity to meet Ken Carter.  Ken is best known for the story of his life "Coach Carter" played by Samuel Jackson.  The basketball coach that was serious about his craft and took matters in his own hand to force his players to do their best.  I have to change the script a little because I watched ESPN OTL this morning and it caught my attention on this conversation about bringing back the coach from Rutgers (Mike Rice).  For those of you who missed the episode and have not hear of Mike Rice.  Just say he is an abusive coach and I believe there is no place for him in college sports.  Agree or disagree join in on the conversation tonight here on BTR at 9:30pm est 01:05:00ParentCoachingParentnoESPN,OTL,COACHINGI have to change the script a little because I watched ESPN OTL this morning and it caught my attention on this conversation about bringing back the coach fromParents Perspective ......... w/Special Guest Mary Babers-Greenhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/22/parents-perspective-wspecial-guest-mary-babers-greenParentshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/22/parents-perspective-wspecial-guest-mary-babers-green/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/22/parents-perspective-wspecial-guest-mary-babers-greenMon, 22 Jun 2015 01:30:00 GMTParents Perspective ......... w/Special Guest Mary Babers-Green Let's talk about sports and the game of basketball.  How far is to far when it comes to our children?  Well one of our very own preaches, teaches, and talks about the length she would go to support her child.  Yes I am talking about Mary, our guest this evening.  Mary is the mother of Draymond Green of the 2014-15 season NBA Champion, Golden State Warriors.  Although I had the pleasure to be introduced to Mary prior to the Warriors making their run to the title.  I also had the opportunity to follow her on Twitter @babers_mary, as she shared her views of the playoffs.  Join us this evening in a conversation with another dedicated parent as she shares her perspective and experience. 01:05:00ParentCoachingParentnoparents,Draymond Green, sports, basketball,NBALet's talk about sports and the game of basketball.  How far is to far when it comes to our children?  Well one of our very own preaches, teaches, and talks abParents Perspective .... w/Special Guest Junior Burroughhttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/15/parents-perspectiveParentshttps://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/15/parents-perspective/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/pcpn/2015/06/15/parents-perspectiveMon, 15 Jun 2015 01:30:00 GMTParents Perspective .... w/Special Guest Junior BurroughJunior Burrough went from Charlotte to Oak Hill to UVA to Boston Celtics. High School Athletic Transfers w/ Larry Rubama      While transfers are nothing new, many coaches and school administrators say they are alarmed at how often athletes are changing schools - and how many are doing so.  In all fairness, is it the athletes that are making these changes or their parents?  I have not seen a case yet where an athlete told his parents, mom and dad, I am changing my address, because I want to go to school “X”, because they have a better football program than school “Y”.  Parents what have we fallen into?  What failures are we setting our children up for?  Why do we believe that a transfer will aid in securing a college athletic scholarship?      Many questions to be addressed and answered, but it all starts with us as parents.  Where do we start parents?  We will start here tonight on the Parents Coaching Parents Network.  We are here to provide as much support and guidance as we can, from our perspective.  We value our resources as they are connected across the US.  So join in on the conversation and share your views on this very important topic that has such a huge impact on our children as athletes. A player in a Salt Lake City rec-league soccer game attacked referee Ricardo Portillo from behind after receiving a yellow card. The players’ sucker punch placed Portillo in a coma with severe brain swelling. Portillo died a week after the attack. Portillo lifted his "Yellow Card," issuing a warning to the 17-year-old boy. He then began writing the infraction in his official’s notebook. According to the police report, Portillo probably never saw the blow coming — a powerful punch to the head. Feeling dizzy, Portillo sat down and began vomiting blood. "He was laying on the ground, on his left side in a fetal position," Officer Jason Huggard wrote. "Ricardo was complaining of pain in his face, back and [of] being nauseated. ... He had spit up a small amount of blood in his saliva." 00:33:00ParentCoachingParentnosoccer,officials,violence,youth,athletes17 Year-Old Soccer Player Kills Ref With Sucker Punch Over Yellow Card. How Early is Too Early?      Parents this one is for you ..... How early is considered too early to get involved in the recruiting process?  Yes we do stress the point of getting in volved during your child's middle school days, but there may be some other thoughts on coaches coming after your child in this early times.  Weigh-in on this conversation, we love to hear your thoughts.  This is a valuable time for your athletes's transition ...... Let us hear your Pro's & Con's when it come to this phase of the game.      Have you heard this story?  The recruiting race for eighth grader Dylan Moses is heating up, with only 45 months until his National Signing Day: Mack Brown has offered the 6'1, 215-pound middle schooler. Texas has never offered a middle school player before, but those in the scouting industry seem to think that this kid is special: he's garnered eight offers, all from powerhouse schools, all without having played a snap of varsity football. He won't play in college until the players who pledged on the most recent signing day are already graduated or playing their senior seasons, but his unique physical skill set make him worth hyping early, apparently. The Baton Rouge native, likely to play outside linebacker in high school and then eventually in college, is easily the most coveted player in the class of 2017. The Longhorns join LSU, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and others in the hunt for the athletically gifted youngster. 00:31:00ParentCoachingParentnorecruiting,middle school, athletes, youth, sportsParents this one is for you ..... But you can boost your performance even more by paying attention to the food you eat on game day. Strive for a game-day diet rich in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and low in fat. Here are some guidelines on what to eat and when: Eat a meal 2 to 4 hours before the game or event: Choose a protein and carbohydrate meal (like a turkey or chicken sandwich, cereal and milk, chicken noodle soup and yogurt, or pasta with tomato sauce).Eat a snack less than 2 hours before the game: If you haven't had time to have a pre-game meal, be sure to have a light snack such as low-fiber fruits or vegetables (like plums, melons, cherries, carrots), crackers, a bagel, or low-fat yogurt. Consider not eating anything for the hour before you compete or have practice because digestion requires energy — energy that you want to use to win. Also, eating too soon before any kind of activity can leave food in the stomach, making you feel full, bloated, crampy, and sick. Everyone is different, so get to know what works best for you. You may want to experiment with meal timing and how much to eat on practice days so that you're better prepared for game day. Want to get an eating plan personalized for you? The U.S. government has developed a website, ChooseMyPlate.gov, that tells a person how much to eat from different food groups based on age, gender, and activity level. 00:35:00ParentCoachingParentnohealth,food,playing,children,sportsYour performance on game day will depend on the foods you've eaten over the past several days and weeks. As we all know that is the option for a selected group of college athletes playing basketball.  The focus is on the high profile young men.  These young men have been ranked as high prospects by national sports media as potential immediate pro in the NBA.  The NBA Draft of 2005 was the last draft class to except young men straight from high school (Martell Webster, Seattle Prep HS).  Since then the requirement has been 1 year following high school.  Now know that doesn’t necessarily translate to 1 year in college, but just as it has been stated, 1 year after high school.  To test that state one young man (Brandon Jennings) decided not to attend college for a year, but to go overseas immediately after high school.  He has since then completed his overseas tour and was drafted 10thoverall in the 2009 NBA Draft.    Parents what are your thoughts on this?  If it was your child would you be in support of this opportunity?  Does the immediate financial gain outweigh a solid education?  Having the ability to understand the language of the agreement between your child and a potential agent, is this important?  Should your child be able to decipher their contract?  Does this “One & Done” scenario true benefit our child?  We have our thoughts in the PCP Network, we would like to hear yours.   00:45:00ParentCoachingParentnoNBA,education,one and done,SCHOLARSHIP,COLLEGEAs we all know that is the option for a selected group of college athletes playing basketball.  The focus is on the high profile young men.  These young men haParents Perspective ... In sports like football, soccer, and ice hockey, studies show that every season around 50% of athletes experience concussive symptoms after a hit to the head. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of these are reported and diagnosed. Additionally, many diagnosed concussions are not treated properly. These undiagnosed and poorly managed concussions put young athletes at risk of Second-Impact Syndrome, which can cause permanent injury or even death. 00:32:00ParentCoachingParentnoconcussions,injuries,sports,education,athletesMedical research has exposed a brain trauma crisis in contact sports. The Arizona State University point-shaving scheme in the 90s, the 1999 University of Minnesota men’s basketball academic cheating scandal and even the recent Rick Pitino extortion case are perfect examples of an innocent American pastime gone wrong. 00:58:00ParentCoachingParentnoscandalls,Student-Athletes,college,scholarships,sportsFor college sports, winning has its price .....
