    Stop the mothers act

Please forward to anyone you think may be able to help.

Time is running out! The Senate is on an Easter break but when they reconvene on March 31 or later, the MOTHERS Act (S. 1375) could pass quickly through committee and the floor of the Senate. It passed the House last October. The MOTHERS Act will institute mass psychiatric screening and push drugs on expectant and new mothers.

    What we need right now:
    Petition Signatures http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-the-dangerous-and-invasive-mothers-act
Endorsements, either by name or by organizations and either as written statements or willingness to be added to our press releases as contacts (experts, or survivors)
Publicity: links to our petition and the senate contact info. front and center on your websites; radio show discussions, media articles, TV broadcasts, overall awareness

To the HELP Committee of the US Senate, members of Congress, members of the press, and citizens of the USA:

We write to you today to urge you to stop The MOTHERS Act from becoming law. Certain organizations who are promoting this act to you have done so out of an imprudent desire to increase treatment of postpartum conditions or depression during pregnancy by prescribing antidepressants or other dangerous black box-labeled, ineffective drugs. This bill has been killed three times in Congress since 2002. This past session, the House voted to cut debate short and suspend the rules in order to pass the bill (http://uniteforlife.org/MOTHERSactdied3times.htm). The timing of the legislation could not be more inappropriate considering the recent widely-publicized news confirming what many have known for decades - that antidepressants do not even work (http://www.uniteforlife.org/plosnobenefits.htm, http://uniteforlife.org/suppresseddata.htm, http://uniteforlife.org/doctorletter.htm), and the increasingly common mass murders and suicides which have been preceded by the perpetrator’s use of violence-inducing drugs! Furthermore, this bill would ensure invasions of privacy and the potential for loss of freedom and other constitutional and human rights, including the right to life and the right to equal protection under the law. These are compelling legal reasons to reject this bill and any bill like it. In fact, this bill should never have even been considered!

Has Congress forgotten these freedoms and human rights? Other sectors of the population who might be at even greater risk of depression, or those who pose a real threat to children are not targeted this way. A massive screening program of mothers not only makes no sense, but it also insults women and motherhood and attempts to label pregnant and postpartum women as sick or deranged. Women have enough to worry over already when getting ready to have a new baby, and they do not need to have complying with a mass psychiatric screening effort added to their to-do lists. Targeting women and their unborn children and putting them at risk of human rights violations and death must not be supported. To approve this bill, not only would Congress demonstrate total disregard for the Constitution and for the citizens of our country, but it would invite federal lawsuits to challenge the bill, wasting even more tax dollars on defending something that should simply be taken off the table now just as it was six years ago, and twice since. Passing this bill would also further degrade our confidence in government and humanity and result in further suspiciousness of those in elected office and positions of power.

Wanting to help mothers and families and thereby help society is a wonderful thing. But we must address the fact that the methods being suggested as treatments are harmful and will only add to the already high body count. A recent study in Sweden revealed that psychiatric drug use preceded 80% of adult suicides. The US FDA added a black box warning on antidepressants in 2004 because they double the risk of suicide. Antidepressants also increase the likelihood of psychosis for new mothers tenfold, according to the package label. The FDA also issued a black box warning for suicide on anticonvulsant drugs recently (drugs used to "treat" the mania that emerges when people take SSRIs), and they issued a not approvable letter to Eli Lilly for their new drug application for a new version of Zyprexa.

The patent application for a derivative of Prozac contained statements that the drug did not cause as many of the effects of Prozac and indicated that risks such as suicide and self-injury were reduced with the new derivative. However, this drug was never marketed.

A voluntary mental health screening program called Teen Screen, which was devised as a way to detect teens who are suicidal and prevent them from self-harm has backfired in a big way. The program, which is not government-endorsed or mandated, has a misdiagnosis rate between 84-94% and it is reported that 90% of subjects wound up getting on psychiatric drugs. However, these suicide prevention efforts do not even serve the purpose intended. The suicide prevention efforts of the US military, for example, have failed in a major way. The SSRIs and other drugs being given as treatments to soldiers (drugs which carry suicide black box warnings) have been linked to a 20% increase in suicide in the military in just one year.

If more women get screened for depression, more women will take antidepressants, and more women will become suicidal, homicidal, or psychotic, and their babies could suffer from the drug effects themselves via breast milk and in utero exposure. Antidepressants are not approved for newborns, let alone unborn children, yet there have been massive efforts to promote these drugs to pregnant women over the past few years. Let women and their families deal with depression in their own way. The number of women who get depressed may be significant but it is by no means the majority of women. This program is obviously both terribly unnecessary and extremely dangerous. Should a woman want help, she should be able to get it. But she should not have to suffer for asking for help, and she should not have to be pressured to take drugs, go to a hospital, or be subjected to inhumane and discriminatory treatment. Families, caregivers, and counselors can do a better job of helping mothers if the government would just leave them alone rather than try to scare them or coerce them.

Also keep in mind that in the House of Representatives, the only 3 people to vote against the bill were Ron Paul (R, TX-14), Jeff Flake (R, AZ-6), and Paul Broun (R, GA-10). (However, there were 46 abstentions.) Do our Representatives represent the citizens, or the pharmaceutical companies? Who is doing the work to get this much overwhelming support from Congress? Certainly not American mothers. As you can see from our petition (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-the-dangerous-and-invasive-mothers-act), as the people become aware of this plan they are outraged. If this is still a representative democracy and not a pharmocracy, then Congress must listen to us and kill this bill now.

    Addendum

Here are a few examples of the harm that can come from this bill – The MOTHERS Act – and from the drugs that will be prescribed more frequently if it passes.

    Inducing homicide:
Please see www.ssristories.com for over 2100 documented cases of suicide, homicide, bizarre behavior and other crimes linked to antidepressants.

Andrea Yates was taking Effexor when she murdered her children (this drug now warns on the label that it causes "homicidal ideation").
There are many, many sad stories to read about on www.ssristories.com.

It is quite obvious that there is a huge financial conflict of interest with our politicians who have supported this bill. See the text of the bill with comments at: http://www.uniteforlife.org/billcomments.htm

To see who cosponsored the bill in the US Senate, go to http://www.uniteforlife.org/MOTHERpress.htmcurrentcosponsors
Then, go to http://uniteforlife.org/pharmafunding.htm to read about the top political recipients of pharmaceutical funding.

You might also be interested to know that at least two thirds of FDA funding comes from the pharmaceutical companies themselves. See: http://www.citizen.org/pressroom/release.cfm?ID=2617

There is a tremendous amount of information on both prevention and safe and effective treatments for PPD.

    Please see:
    http://uniteforlife.org/adrenalppd.htm and http://uniteforlife.org/MOTHERpress.htmprevention

However, The MOTHERS Act quite simply promotes antidepressants as well as funds new antidepressants, while also requiring screening, referral to mental health professionals, and even involuntary hospitalization.
