As I sit here and write looking at my 86 year old mother lying in her bed tears filled my eyes. She gave me life. She raised me right. She was always there for me. I thank God for my life. My wife and I will keep her home with us until she passes. I lover her as I did my father, more than words can express.
It’s funny how the cards of life are dealt so differently to everyone. For the grace of God go I. I’m not saying my life was perfect by any means. I am the sinner of all sinners. My flesh seeks to consume me as it does everyone. But my upbringing helped make me less vulnerable to temptation and trouble. I think people have to find their own way through the maze of life.
Parents can teach, talk, tell, and scream until they are blue in the face, but kids have to make their own decisions about how they want to live and what they want to do. Parents are there to help along or guide if you will. Parents are fighting an almost losing game in our present day society. Most young people regardless of socioeconomic level are raised outside the home or if inside by the computer, television or telephone.
Thank God I was born and raised in the country. I went to a country school. I rode a country school bus. And I even went to a country church. At forty eight years old I have experienced most things kids today will never think about like riding a horse, raising my own chickens, riding bulls and broncs in the rodeo, using an outdoor toilet while fighting off the yellow jackets, plowing the fields with my tractor, camping in the woods for days without any modern conveniences of home. I am so proud of the way I grew up. I am so thankful that my cards were dealt that way.
Oh how I wish every kid could escape the cement jungle we live in today. Our houses have become high class jail cells. Our yards prison walls. Our streets work farms. Our communities war zones. Our world a sea of chaos. It is not getting any better and don’t think it will.
When are we going to wake up and take our heads out of the sand? When are we going to realize just how bad it really is and take some major steps to improve our condition? We are all responsible for the way things are and we should all be responsible for fixing the problem.
It all starts with you, the individual.
Do you love yourself?
Do you forgive yourself?
Do you respect yourself?
Do you love your neighbor as you do yourself?
Are you a hypocrite or impostor?
Do you set a good example in your home?
Do you have a temper?
Do you consider yourself better and above other people?
Do you treat others as you would like to be treated?
Are you understanding and forgiving?
Are you a good listener?
Do you really care about what other people have to say?
Do you go out of your way to help the truly needy?
Are you involved in any church or outreach programs?
Is your company involved in community outreach?
Do you believe in God?
Do you believe God?
Do you believe in the power of prayer and meditation?
Do you rule with an iron fist ors kind heart?
Do you gossip or slander?
Do you drink too much?
Are you addicted to drugs?
Are you willing to forgive and forget?
Do you find yourself digging up the past and throwing it at the one you love?
Most of us take life too seriously. We spend our day stressed out over things that are really not important in the big picture. A lot of people are obsessed with trying to win over that new client. Bang their brains out trying to pay for that new car, boat, or home when they really can’t afford it. Life is moving way to fast for some people. They have created a pace they really can’t keep up with. The rat race will eventually destroy you and everyone around you. Your unrealistic expectations will cause you to chase your tail around like a dog that is expending a lot of energy but going absolutely nowhere.
If you want to help make the world a better place to live; then slow down, take a good, hard, slow look at yourself. Would you want to date you, marry you, go out with you, work with you, be friends with you, and take a vacation with you? Look in the mirror. Do you really even know who you are? I mean have you ever really taken a good, hard look at yourself. Try it. It might change your life. I know it did mine along with my mom’s and dad’s of course.
