    Apathy or Action

    Apathy or Action: What do you choose?
    What do your actions say about you? Do you hear a story in the news & says how horrible it is & that something has to change? Are you sitting there waiting for someone to do something about it? Most people are uninvolved in our country's & community's most pressing issues until it affects them directly. Often people talk about what's wrong, yet do nothing to change it.

    Apathy & non-involvement is the biggest hurdle in making the changes in society today. Who amongst my classmates has ever volunteered in a domestic violence shelter, a children's center for abused, neglected or sick kids? or gone to a hospice just to talk to a person who's facing the end? Have you written to your elected officials to demand that an injustice by a state agency be looked into? 

    Nothing changes without action, without enough voices uniting to stop an injustice. I pose to you all these questions I have asked myself: Have you ever turned your back on a situation because it wasn't your problem? Would you call the police if you saw an abuse taking place even when you didn't know the people? The real test comes when it's someone you know & love, such as a family member. Would you call the police if the abuser was a brother, sister, parent, or  your own child? All too often we see someone on tv & say what scum they are for their abusive behavior. What would be your reaction if that were a family member. Would you still call the police to stop them from abusing? All too often we look the other way when it is someone in our own family. Yet, the perpetrators we see on tv are indeed someone's family member. I have had a difficult time with that myself. What do you do when it's a family member?  We say nothing, & do nothing to stop that person, because we feel a sense of loyalty to them because they are 'family'.

    One thing I have learned in the last 27 years is this: There is a higher loyalty that should always prevail, & that is loyalty to do the morally right thing. More often than not it isn't the easiest choice or the most popular one, but it is the choice that will leave your conscience & your soul less stressed, even if it doesn't make your life less stressed. People do not tell on a family members abuse because of pressure from other family members to have family loyalty & that pressure keeps them silenced. However, that is precisely how & why the cycle of abuse continues. In my own family, it has been that way. I know of many females in my own family who have been abused and yet are still living in silence today.


    What I know is this. I am involved,vocal, & active in the attempt to expose injustices in this country and then keep my big mouth running until the injustice is snuffed out by exposure.


    Evil & injustice thrive in the dark behind the doors of silence & seclusion, yet once exposed it will not thrive. I ask all of my fellow classmates, to look into your own lives. Do you know a child, a woman, or elderly person who is being hurt or neglected? That could be your child or you in years to come. Would you want someone to speak up for your child, your sibling, your parent, or even you in your old age?

    I know we are all busy, but will someone one day be too busy to save you, your daughter, or your grandchild? Who will stand up & take action if everyone waits on the other person to do it. Someone has to be the first to make a stand; will that someone be YOU? It has already been me. And, I will continue to be vocal about these issues & I will continue to take action & take a stand until my last breath. I want my children to know that fear did not rule my morals & my conscience, but rather my conscience & morals over-rode my fears. What path will you choose? Apathy & inaction or conscience & action- What legacy will you leave? What will you see looking back through the window of time?
    Choose well, our choices define the world we leave our children.
