Today's show deals with WWII Veterans who are known for their strength and perseverance. Their stories will soon be all we have to honor the valor and sacrifice of the greatest generation. The remaining time we have with these hero's is fading and that is why our special guest today is world renounced author, Howard Layton. In his new book, Layton recounts his adventures as Royal Airforce Navigator, provides the only personal account of victory at El-Alamein and talks about his love won and lost during the war. "Love and Sand: An RAF Flyer's Memoir of Love, Lies, and Mayhem in the World War II Deserts of North Africa. (Sept 2008) Check out his book at Three Spires Publishing, ISBN 978-0-967008-5-7, For Only $24.00! His first book is "The Thirteen Club". At 2pm I give our listeners some background of the war until about 2:30pm. Then, Howard will be on at 2:30 to tell his story. This is a great opportunity for our younger generation and history buffs to hear this first-hand account of WWII before their voices fade in the distance. Check it out and tell your friends to listen. After he is interviewed, I will open my phone lines to take live calls........Check out his web site at http://www.howardlayton.com

The Veterans History Project
The Veterans History Project relies on volunteers to collect and preserve stories of wartime service.
Our primary focus is on first-hand accounts of U.S. Veterans from the following wars:
In addition, those U.S. citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also invited to share their valuable stories.
How did the Veterans History Project start?
The United States Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000. The authorizing legislation (Public Law 106-380), sponsored by Representatives Ron Kind, Amo Houghton, and Steny Hoyer in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senators Max Cleland and Chuck Hagel in the U.S. Senate, received unanimous support and was signed into law by President William Jefferson Clinton on October 27, 2000.

Sunday, March 21st, 1993, three travelers are waiting on the platform at Debrecen railroad station in Hungary. Howard Layton is listening to his brother-in-law, András who is lecturing Howard's daughter Paulette.
"The trip to Cluj Nabakov will take several hours and you must use it to quiz your father about his family history. Learn all you can, while you can. One day you will be glad you did that."
As Howard listened to this lecture he realized he would enjoy telling his daughter the story of his life. In fact, he mused, why not write about it? Putting his action-filled history on paper would provide him with an outlet for artistic creativity and would serve as an effective substitute for all those wonderful times he had enjoyed as a professional actor in England.
The more he thought about it, the more excited he became about the prospect. He would write a trilogy. He would start with the story of how, at the end of WWII his wife Nárcissza and her family had been chased out of Hungary by the advancing Russians. He would write about how he had met Nárcissza and how they had married, raised six children and built a high-tech manufacturing company together.
Next would come the story of his own life and his years in the Royal Air Force serving in the deserts of North Africa in World War Two, and the interwoven agony of pining for the wonderful girl he had won and lost during those years. Finally, he would write about growing up in a broken home in the between-wars years and going off to work at age fourteen to help support himself and his mother and younger brother.
Thank you for your visit and for giving me the opportunity to share my adventures with you.
I have been blessed with a varied and eventful life, and this website is designed so that you can explore whichever facet(s) you find to be of interest. And of course, once you've finished exploring the website, there's a lot more information in the books themselves.
Happy browsing!
A word about the books themselves: Both "Love and Sand" and "The Thirteen Club" are historically accurate and un-embellished. Indeed, history buffs will find quite a lot of new material in the former book—vital elements and activities in the desert war that have not been published elsewhere. Moreover, every facet of the military action in the book can be checked in all detail at the British National Archives at Kew Gardens in England. Astonishingly, that establishment provides every detail of every flight of the conflict throughout the war, gives the names of each of the crew members and reports all of the action they encountered and in which they participated.
And by the way, the love story that intertwines all that military action, is also, alas, quite true.
