Where are we headed economically

Profit maximization or job creation? Responsible economic growth or economic growth at any cost? Banking to promote GDP or banking to promote investor wealth and large commissions from complex derivative investing that contributes nothing to GDP? Is it every man for himself as the ship begins to sink? What about our best and brightest, the ones responsible for punching holes in the ship to begin with, why do they appear to be engaged in stealing everything of value including engine parts, steering apparatus, and the very tools necessary to patch the ship. Perhaps we have allowed our drive for profits to over rule our common sense.
