This episode originally aired live on Sunday 29 December 2013 on KZUM in Lincoln, NE. Phil went solo for the show as Corwin was having car trouble. The lead story was the front page of the Lincoln Journal Star and their 20 year follow-up on the Brandon Teena murder. Phil followed that up with coverage of the Boy Scouts of America and their new policy allowing for openly gay Scouts and troop leaders that went into effect on January 1, 2014. Other stories were covered as well.
Twenty years ago Brandon Teena and two of his friends were murdered in a house outside of Humbolt, NE. The murder had a personal element to it for Phil. He had family in Humbolt at the time, worked with Brandon's sister and was discovering what the Nebraska atmosphere for the LGBTQ population was like at the time. Twenty years later and things are only slightly better.
Listen to the episode to hear more and learn about some of the other issues that Phil talked about during his first solo edition of Lavender Hill.
