It took a while, but I finally convinced Joe Sitting Owl White to appear on the Oopa Loopa Cafe. And on Thanksgiving night to boot. Joe worked out how the so called Jubilee Stone was used as both a calendar and, possibly, a navigation tool. Using personal knowledge of Cherokee lore, tradition, and careful application of practical experiment and logic, he was able to reconstruct its use and how its ceremony dates coincide with Jewish holidays. We'll have pictures, diagrams, and the object's leading researcher, Chief Joe Sitting Owl White, to explain the Jubilee Stone. Go easy on the turkey, this live segment will be too good to miss due to Tryptophan-induced coma. Pumpkin pie and a cup o' Joe are recommended.

    Original Air Date:

Linda Godfrey, Beastmaster of the Upper Midwest

In the first half of this segment, Linda took us along on a live ghost hunting expedition to the former Masonic Lodge in Richland Center, WI. In the second half, we discussed Linda's book, The Beast of Bray Road, that detailed her personal quest to determine the truth about the unholy critter that roams the small town of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and her more recent title, Hunting the American Werewolf. These are definitive reading for anyone and everyone interested in all things hairy, monstrous, and, of course, wolfish. If you thought werewolves were strictly the imaginative product of horror novelists and Hollywood scriptwriters, then think again. As Linda reveals, there really may be diabolical man-beasts roaming by moonlight the woods, the forests and the landscape of the more remote parts of North America and a considerable number of the not so remote parts, too. The Natives knew it, the more recent witnesses sometimes talk about it, and Linda is the chronicler for these accounts. We pay special attention to the Native teachings and sites that seem to support the existence of these as real creatures.

  • Original Air Date:

    Tough Times

The economic woes are even affecting the diffusion community. We'll talk about the most immediate impacts, what it may mean, and what we can do to help. Also, a pointed follow-up on last week's topic, archeology news, and, maybe, notes from the field.

  • Original Air Date:

    The Politics of Ancient Trade

To paraphrase Teddy R, "Walk softly and carry a huge amount of evidence". The difficult part is choosing where to start. There is ample evidence -- on both sides of both oceans -- that heavy traffic was going both ways for a very, very long time. The copper "trade" is the linchpin of most diffusion theories, but the primary blank spot, up to now, has been "what did the Old World offer in exchange?" Tom Anderton may have a good candidate: wine. We'll describe Tom's hypothesis, the evidence of it, and the practicality (and sheer elegance) of it. Also, update some news, update CoPS, and update the Atlantic Conference news.

  • Original Air Date:

    Major Powell, Major Pain

Major John Wesley Powell was a war hero, an explorer, an accomplished linguist, and the person who, almost single-handedly, established ethnology as a science. He is also the main reason that the "Columbus First" doctrine exists. We'll examine the man, his upbringing, his career and adventures, and the reasons he might have pursued this agenda.
