Join Richard Modiano as he talks to Gary Phillips about several of his new books
Son of a mechanic and a librarian, South Central L.A. native
Gary Phillips draws on his experiences ranging from community activist, labor organizer to delivering dog cages in writing his tales of chicanery and malfeasance. He is co-editor with Andrea Gibbons of the incendiary collection, Send My Love and a Molotov Cocktail! Stories of Crime, Love and Rebellion from PM Press, and is editor of the upcoming Scoundrels: Tales of Greed, Lust and Financial Crimes from Down & Out Books. His most recent mystery novel is The Underbelly, about a homeless Vietnam vet’s search for a disabled friend who has disappeared from L.A.’s Skid Row. He was also editor of the bestselling Orange County Noir collection, and co-edited the recently re-issued Cocaine Chronicles, both from Akashic Books. He writes a regular on pop culture, race and politics at fourstory.org/.
