This Side of Early by Naomi Ayala
Naomi Ayala's poems explore wide-ranging themes in an ever-changing landscape--from the city streets to the introspective solace of the woods. These lyrics deconstruct the political world of man, offer hope through a compelling, lyrical spiritual intimacy, and bridge the gap between the two with words full of ecological intensity.

New Poetry by Iranians Around the World
Edited by Niloufar Talebi

WHAT IS A PALUZZI?

... It's a question that has plagued mankind like a festering virus since the invention of speech... When we crawled out from caves and thoughts formed the first sentences in order for the masses to communicate, saying such things as, "Raw meat too chewy," and "Owww… Fire is freakin' hot!"

Stuff like that.

Actually the question that pops up most is, “What the hell are you doing?” The people who tend to ask this are those who didn’t know me when I was younger. When I took two fake severed heads made from Styrofoam and had them painted the color of caucasian flesh, cut the top off of one so it appeared scalped, spreading lots of dry fake blood I mixed on the severed section, and took the other head and dripped blood from it’s gouged out eye sockets. A noose made from shoestring rope went around both of their necks, and then I hung them from my bedroom window… on the outside. I guess being the only white kid growing up in Eastchester Housing Projects in the Bronx wasn’t enough to get attention – I had to make the neighborhood think I was insane as well. Was there something seriously wrong with me?

In his stunning new book of poems and prose, Stompin’ at The Grand Terrace: A Jazz Memoir in Verse, award-winning Minnesota writer Philip Bryant revisits his boyhood home on Chicago’s South Side to capture the sights and sounds of post-war America as seen and heard through the eyes and ears of two old friends whose lives—and loves—spin joyously around jazz. Erika Ayón emigrated from Mexico when she was five years old. She grew up in South Central Los Angeles. She graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English. Erika was selected as a 2009 PEN Emerging Voices Fellow. She is currently working on a collection of poetry entitled Orange Lady. The title stems from her childhood experience of selling oranges with her family on the streets of Los Angeles, in order to survive financially. Through her writing, Erika addresses issues such as poverty, race, cultural implications, gender, and the immigrant experience.

Erika | Ayón | poetry | poem | poetry

Join Rachelle as she talks to Erika Ayón

Never one to be defined by position, parenthood or place of origin, Tracey Pontani defines herself with passion and verse. She has since given back to the scene by volunteering at numerous poetry events. She then took that idea of service one step futher by picking up the responsibility and honor of organizing Firestorm, Albuquerque's all women's open-mic and poetry slam.
Hettie Jones’s twenty-three books for children and adults include her memoir of the Beat scene, How I Became Hettie Jones; the poetry collection Drive, which won the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber Award; Big Star Fallin’ Mama, Five Women in Black Music, honored by the New York Public Library; and No Woman No Cry, a memoir she authored for Bob Marley’s widow, Rita. Jones has published in journals such as The Village Voice, Global City Review and Ploughshares, and just out are From Midnight to Dawn, the Last Tracks of the Underground Railroad (with Jacqueline Tobin), and a third poetry collection, Doing 70.

Best known for her memoir, which has been called "A feminist scrutiny…those lost decades needed, as the Beats themselves needed it," Hettie Jones has been appearing since 1979 at venues from cafes to colleges. She has been described as "a potent and fearless poet" (Booklist), with "a good mind and sound ideas" (Independent Publisher) and "the gift to paint with vivid words and to cloak her wit with images that linger in the mind long after the reading" (Midwest Book Review). Her most recent collection was praised for being the work of a poet “fully present in the world…who has really thought about life.”
