Whereas I appreciate that Chicago is in need of some critical intervention and prevention initiatives, I feel that the Mayor needs to rethink his proposed strategies to address this growing epidemic of violence. Mayor Daley's plan calls for more police, when the people in the community are already showing that they do not trust police. He speaks of needing more role models after promoting a back to school event headlining a singer whose hit song is about birthday sex. I do not think that he or his advisors should have the responsibility for finding role models.
Our youth need peer leadership development where these young people learn how to connect with each other to make real impact and positive influence. As pointed out in our Thursday morning broadcast these young need to have a confidential ear from someone who his trained to listen and respond to the violent situations that may be occurring in their friend's homes. The Mayor also spoke about mentors for these parents when they often need mental health services with trained and concerned professional along with group intervention and support.
Friday's concluding episode for "Stop the Violence" reveals reasons that Mayor Daley's proposed plan for Chicago, Illinois falls short of the real issues that face such an approach. The candid discussion about how citizens feel about the violence gives valuable insight that could help develop more realistic solutions.
