The Final Segment: How are political decisions influenced by religion and spirituality? Is it appropriate to question President Obama's religion and spirituality? Is America's concern for healthcare related to or influenced by religion and/or spirituality? If so, how can the diversity of religious or spritual beliefs be overcome to reach a unified consensus with addressing the health concerns of the nation? THE PROBLEM: Obesity and other chronic health diseases are causing a public health crisis in America and particularly in the region of the South known as “The Stroke Belt.” There is a report published by the Southern Governor's Association that includes the following passage: "Southern Governors encourage Congress and the Administration to partner with states, territories and local entities to build better public awareness and strategies to deal with public health issues relating to disease and injury prevention. Federal funding to address public health issues should be updated to more accurately reflect population increases and current state needs to enable state and local health partners to serve the South’s neediest residents. Additionally, the public education system in America has a new and emerging task before them to help confront obesity and related diseases in children. Funding should be provided to adequately inform America’s youth about the dangers of obesity and physical inactivity." http://www.southerngovernors.org/portals/0/PDF/2009%20Priorities%20and%20Policies%20FINAL.pdf Perhaps the solution to health problems can be addressed through religion and/or spirituality. There is a grant announcement (discussed in previous segments)that offers funds to explore how religion and spirituality influence health. We invite forward thinkers, entrepreneurs and solutions oriented talkers to engage in meaningful problem solving. These episodes may be forwarded to government officials and others to let them review solutions oriented discussions.
