SLUMP MARKETING SUCCESS – RADIO show #1
Greetings and welcome to the "Slump Marketing Success" radio show.
I am your host, John Lawlor
I have been fascinated by marketing for over 30 years and I have been online since I purchased my first computer in 1979.
Our topic today is "Overcoming Your Marketing Comfort Zone"
I am going to start by talking about "Tank," our 30 pound African Spur tortoise.
Tank has resided on our backyard for the past year.
When Tank the tortoise first arrived at our house he avoided contact with the humans in the house and quickly retreated into his shell whenever one of our dogs got too close.
One might say that Tank was living within his own "comfort zone"
I'm pleased to tell you that Tank has greatly expanded his "comfort zone since his arrival.
...he ignores the dogs, even when they bark in his face
...and he even comes when called and eats out of our hands
...but most interestingly -- he comes to the sliding glass back door and peers in if we haven't put his food out early enough.
What does a tortoise living in my backyard have to do with marketing during a recession, economic downturn or business slump?
it is really about "comfort zone" -- your marketing comfort zone
What is a "comfort zone?"
from Wikipedia, the leading user-contributed encyclopedia
A comfort zone denotes that limited set of behaviors that a person will engage without becoming anxious.
A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries that are not real.
Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security.
In prosperous times a "comfort zone" often leads to complacency
How would you classify your marketing comfort zone profile?
old media maven
new media maven
straddling the old and the new
connector
Every business marketer that I have ever worked with has a clearly established "comfort zone of marketing"
that comfort zone has been established by:
familiarity
success
fear
When did you start using online marketing?
How many years has it been since you began using online or internet marketing?
If you have been involved with online marketing for less than 5 years -- then you probably experienced a business downturn and all of the talk about the "R" word - recession might be causing you to loose sleep.
All of the talk of recession causes fear in the marketplace.
Fear is one of the boundaries of everyone's comfort zone.
Is fear going to cause you to retreat into your shell, your marketing comfort zone....
or are you ready to explore ways to expand your comfort zone while others are retreating.
are you going to charge forward and explore
Your "call-to-action" for this call:
take out a sheet of paper and write down
at the top - what is your marketing zone profile?
a media connector
what marketing tactics are you most comfortable with?
what tactics have you been most successful with?
what tactics do you fear the most?
On the next "Slump Marketing Success" radio show we will discuss how to overcome "inertia" and successfully expand your marketing comfort zone -- especially in the face of the "R" word.
