As we press on through modern times and our lives are made easier via various conveniences, it’s easy for us to lose touch with our most basic and primal roots. Mankind didn’t always live in tract housing or high-density apartment buildings, but instead once slept on the ground and survived off of the land. Despite the lack of a need for these skills in our current state, there may be a time when they can come in handy again.

The School of Self-Reliance arose from Christopher and Dolores Nyerges’ dream to live and to teach practical skills to mostly urban folks who’ve lost touch with our most basic roots. Since 1974, Christopher has taken over 30,000 children and adults on his Wild Food Outings, Survival Skills Outings, and other field trips and outdoor programs. He has worked with groups such as Sierra Club, Tree People, Southwest Museum, and the Boy Scouts of America.
