Disabled under 62's living in Elderly housing I live in elderly housing,I am a victim of a young girl in a wheelchair who makes up all kind of stories about me, outright lies, and reports them to my management company in NH. They in turn tell me to stop harassing and threatening her, which i certainly am not doing, or face eviction and ! Another young 20 something, big as an ox,roams around the complex all day, just following people around and breaking things. We have not been able to use the picnic table for 2 years, we have them roaming in the halls or doing their laundry after 11 pm,leaving lights on in rooms they jsut left ,and so forth. They knock on doors and ask for food or money and all their freinds have keys to the place/ Why don't these people have their own place or why aren't they put to useful work. They are capable of making babies, dating, driving, harassing, just about anything but working, and to say anything at all in response to their harassments, make even more trouble for the elderly. I find this going on all across the country ,not only with this mangement company, but others. Would you like these rude, drunk, druggies and worse living with you in your home or aprtemnt? Why do you force them on people who have worked hard all their lives and are now lookin g for a little peace, quiet and contentment. No one is discriminating against the truly poor helplesss people, but these people have too much time on their hands, and thrive on causing disturbances like the drug deal that just went down in Brooklyn and the graffiti on the wall in NOrth Grosvenordale, same out of state management company, they are allowed to leave condoms in th eparking lot and have homeless friends live in all winter and beer parties galore with impunity. Reporting them only leads to your own home getting ransacked or invaded , your car alarm being set off nightly,or vandalized, your being followed wherever you go,the management sides with them and doesn't want to hear it as they believe their position in life squelches any consequences to their actions.and all that governemnt money coming in is nice, too. If you do not have this in your home, why do you make us endure it? Please find a place for these troublemaking individuals, possibly Iraq,if not in your backyard. I raised my kids, now they are paying for yours and others' to degrade, demean and destroy the earned retirement in peace we so deserve. Please do something. and soon, this haeen ongoing fo ryears, whover thought of bundling up such losers with fine people ought to lose their license for being a human being. Daley: Supreme Court decision 'frightening' Mayor Richard Daley says he doesn't know if the Supreme Court decision striking down Washington's handgun ban will affect a similar law in Chicago. But the mayor calls the ruling "a very frightening decision." Speaking during a morning event at Navy Pier, Daley said any effort to strike down Chicago's handgun ban would likely increase taxes because of the increased need for police presence. He also says violence sparked by the end of the ban would also increase hospitalizations. The court's 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns. Justices say it was incompatible with gun rights under the Second Amendment.

Thanks for your contributions on BTR. Let's not sweep single parenting topics and MALE RESPONSIBLITY under the rug. I realize that I am TAGGED as bitter and disgruntled, but what would that make men who walk away from their children? I thank you for continuing the labels on men who are not responsible. My child's father is trying to tell the world that he is NOT a deadbeat, NOT irresponsible, DID NOT walk away, DOES want to parent. You guys have helped me to make it evident that it is not what a man says, but what he does. Therefore his stereotypical label is befitting to him, no matter what he protests. MEN MUST BE PROACTIVE IN PRESERVING THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS AS A FATHER. I will continue to blog, discuss, and support women who want to talk about it. AMERICA is in denial & shame about SINGLE MOMS and fatherhood responsiblity. There's a movement in America by women to further remove men from the family, and teach young mothers to make a man give up his parental rights as an ultimatum. This is more damaging to our society than male castration. We have more conversations on how to date, than how to parent. IT IS NOT OK FOR A CHILD TO BE WITHOUT A FATHER. We know very well how to live without fathers, it is time to learn how to live with fathers. The children are hurting, obviously not the mothers. Thanks for taking this issue seriously. www.myspace.com/kirilove www.blogtalkradio.com/psycheofthesingleparent http://themakingofadeadbeat.blogspot.com

In the last decade, countless revisionist scholars have followed in the footsteps of John Dittmer and Charles Payne in the pursuit of creating a more complete and complex narrative of the black freedom struggle through historically grounded local studies. Placing local people at the center of civil rights history rather than at its periphery forces the myths of the movement to crumble. Local studies demonstrate that non-violence coexisted alongside self-defense in the South and throughout the nation. They reveal the role women played as local organizers alongside men who missed the spotlight as national mobilizers. Finally, local studies implode the notion that the civil rights movement took place only in the South between 1954 and 1965 and challenge the sharp dichotomies made between civil rights and black power. The goal now is to connect the local, the regional, the national, and when possible, the transnational. Local people from all over the nation drove the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign (PPC)—the first truly national, multiracial anti-poverty movement. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) built Resurrection City—a temporary shantytown of plywood A-frame houses on the National Mall—to display the appalling living conditions endured by the poor and provide a home base for daily protests at various government buildings. But the nine regional caravans that transported the multi-racial coalition of the poor to the capital connected local movements with the national campaign in Washington, D.C. The caravans enabled local people to place their individual needs in a national context and recognize the systemic roots of their poverty. This presentation focuses on the most dramatic of the nine regional caravans, the Mule Train—a caravan of approximately fifteen mule-drawn covered wagons—and Marks, Mississippi, the small Delta town that served as the launching pad for the Mule Train and the PPC. Caravanning to the capital as a moving political theater, the Mule Train enabled participants to perform the limits on poor people’s mobility—both economic and physical. Cultural geographer Tim Cresswell argues that mobility is a site of ideology construction that often invokes contradictory meanings, since it has meant freedom and opportunity for some and shiftlessness and deviance for others. This analysis considers how representations of the Mule Train and its participants fall along racial, class, and gendered lines and how the caravan used mobility as a form of political resistance. The participants’ courage to endure the long and arduous journey and protest in Washington challenges culture of poverty depictions of the poor as lazy and apathetic. Drawing on interviews with Mule Train participants and SCLC archival materials, this presentation demonstrates how the PPC transformed one Delta community and its residents and considers how representations of and memorials to the Mule Train have affected perceptions of poverty nationally and people’s experiences locally. Connecting the past with the present and concentrating on the process of organizing rather than evaluating whether or not the PPC succeeded in meeting its goals, can help us understand what motivates people to join social movements and how they effect participants’ lives. Police brutality and use of excessive force has been one of the central themes of Amnesty International’s campaign on human rights violations in the USA, launched in October 1998. In United States of America: Rights for All (AI Index: AMR 51/35/98), the organization documented patterns of ill-treatment across the USA, including police beatings, unjustified shootings and the use of dangerous restraint techniques to subdue suspects. While only a minority of the many thousands of law enforcement officers in the USA engage in deliberate and wanton brutality, Amnesty International found that too little was being done to monitor or check persistent abusers, or to ensure that police tactics in certain common situations minimized the risk of unnecessary force and injury. The report also noted that widespread, systematic abuses had been found in some jurisdictions or police precincts. It highlighted evidence that racial and ethnic minorities were disproportionately the victims of police misconduct, including false arrest and harassment as well as verbal and physical abuse......

    Highlighted Cases:

    Marty Alston

Marty Alston was an active duty Airforce Fire Fighter home on medical leave in Trenton , NJ to attend to the needs of his daughter when he claims he was kidnapped at gun point by unknown assailants and force to drive them in  a commission of a theorized kidnap for ransom of a convicted drug dealer. Mr. Alston was on his way to pick up food for his wife and children whom he dropped off at the laundry mat when this occurred. The alleged victim, Sean Riley did not file an official police report/statement, testified that Mr. Alston was not one of his assailants and it is believed that the alleged victim was able to escape his attackers because Mr. Alston slowed the van down enough for the alleged victim to jump free of the vehicle. Mr. Alston also stated that he did not know his alleged co-defendant who did not testify. The prosecutor in this case made suspect statements in 2006 that jurors walk into the courtroom with "jaded feelings" towards police officers after a jury would not convict a man of the attempted murder of police officers citing lack of evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Mr. Alston is currently awaiting sentencing behind bars and faces a possible sentence of 30 years...................

    Genarlow Wilson

Could this happen to your child? Your brother?  Your friend?

Genarlow Wilson sits in prison despite being a good son, a good athlete and high school student with a 3.2 GPA. He never had any criminal trouble.  On the day he was to sit for the SAT, at seventeen years old, his life changed forever.  He was arrested.  In Douglas County he was accused of inappropriate sexual acts at a News Year’s Eve party.  A jury acquitted him of the allegation of Rape but convicted him of Aggravated Child Molestation for a voluntary act of oral sex with another teenager.  He was 17, and she was 15.

Along with the label “child molester” which will require him throughout his life to be on a sexual offender registry, Genarlow received a sentence of eleven years — a mandatory 10 years in prison and 1 year on probation.

On July 1st, the new Romeo and Juliet law went into effect in Georgia for any other teen that engages in consensual sexual acts. That change in the law means that no teen prosecuted for consensual oral sex could receive more than a 12 months sentence or be required to register as a sex offender.

Had this law been in effect when Genarlow Wilson was arrested, or had been done after the Marcus Dixon case, Genarlow would not now be in jail.

Genarlow and his mother are overjoyed that no one else in Georgia will have to know their pain. In the meantime, however, the legal fight goes on for Genarlow Wilson.

Genarlow has been incarcerated since February 25, 2005.

    JENA 6

    NAACP SUPPORTS THE "JENA 6"

    The Facts:

In a small highly segregated rural Louisiana town of Jena in September 2006, a black student asked permission from school administrators to sit under the shade of a tree commonly reserved for the enjoyment of white students. School officials advised the black students to sit wherever they wanted and they did. The next day, three nooses, in the school colors, were hanging from the same tree. The Jena high school principal found that three white students were responsible and recommended expulsion. The white superintendent of schools over-ruled the principal and gave the students a three day suspension, saying that the nooses were “a youthful stunt.” Black students decided to resist and organized a sit-in under the tree to protest the lenient treatment given to the noose-hanging white students.

Racial tensions remained elevated throughout the fall. On Monday, December 4 2006, a white student who allegedly had been racially taunting black students in support of the students who hung the nooses got into a fight with black students. Allegedly, the white student was taken to the hospital treated, released, reportedly attended a social function later that evening.

As a result of this incident, six black Jena students were arrested and charged with attempted second degree murder. All six were expelled from school. The six charged were: 17-year-old Robert Bailey Junior whose bail was set at $138,000; 17-year-old Theo Shaw - bail $130,000; 18-year-old Carwin Jones--bail $100,000; 17-year-old Bryant Purvis--bail $70,000; 16 year old Mychal Bell, a sophomore in high school who was charged as an adult and for whom bail was set at $90,000; and a still unidentified minor.

Raymond McKinney for President July 8, 2007 3pm eastern

"America has come to a point in time where we are standing at the crossroads, and the 2008 Presidential Election will decide our course. Do we as a nation want a strong government with a hardened resolve and steadfast moral grounding; ready to confront and bring solutions to the issues that face us today? Do we want to correct the failed immigration system and the porous borders, which are proving to be detrimental to our national security? Are we ready to make a change in our current energy policies so that we are no longer dependent on foreign energy sources, securing a solid energy future for our children and their children? With out a doubt, the answer is yes! America is tired of the political gridlock and scandals of partisan politics. America is tired of politicians. It is time for a change in Washington. Let me prove to you that I am the change America is looking for.

    You decide."

    Ray McKinney
Real Solutions for a Strong America

After doing some prep work for the show I decided that there is no way we can give Mr McKinney adequate time to address all the issues outlined on his web page. Because of the time constraints I will limit the discussion to his positions on the Iraq War and Terrorism. I will however invite him back to discuss the other issues and what his plans are to address them. If you heard me on John Hancock's Show on 1110 AM WBT Radio 99.3 FM  Friday night and are joining us, welcome to One Black Man's View where reasonable people can reasonably agree to disagree. Thank you for the promo John! Below are some links to information related to today's show.

Michael Coard, founding member of Avenging The Ancestors Coalition

    What Is ATAC

ATAC is a broad-based coalition of African historians, activists, attorneys, elected officials, religious leaders, media personalities, and other tax-paying voters who are the descendants of the victims of the greatest holocaust in the history of humankind. ATAC spearheaded a voluminous letter writing campaign and is accumulating a vast amount of signatures in its continuing petition drive, totaling more than 15,000. ATAC held large and vocal demonstrations on July 3, 2002, July 3, 2003, July 3, 2004, and July 1, 2005. In connection with the projected $4.5 million cost of the President’s House plan, ATAC provided substantial documentation to U.S. House Appropriations Committee member Congressman Chaka Fattah of Pennsylvania, who was instrumental in securing an amendment to the Interior Department’s 2003 budget requiring the NPS (and INHP) to develop plans for the President’s House site, including an “appropriate commemoration” of the nine enslaved African descendants there. In August 2005, primarily through the efforts of Congressman Fattah along with the assistance of Congressman Robert Brady of Pennsylvania, $3.6 million in federal funding was made available for the site and the commemoration. Previously, in October 2003, ATAC also helped to secure $1.5 million from Mayor John Street of Philadelphia toward the funding of the commemorative project.

    What ATAC Requires

Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC) and others recently won a relentless four year battle to persuade the National Park Service (NPS) and Independence National Historical Park (INHP) to finally agree to the creation of a preeminent commemorative project- including slave quarters highlighting- on the grounds of the President’s House site. This project is to honor primarily the nine (known) African descendants who were enslaved by President George Washington at America’s first “White House,” which was located at the current site of the new Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia at Sixth and Market Streets. Moreover, this project is to include substantial, significant, and prominent participation from the African American community as architects, construction workers, historians, etc. In fact, this inclusion is consistent with Philadelphia City Council’s 2002 resolution number 020521 “calling upon the National Park Service (and INHP) to ensure equitable economic participation in opportunities arising from the… project and the appropriate memorializing of the… human beings of African descent held in bondage at that site.”

    Why ATAC Requires It

ATAC requires the commemorative project because justice demands it. Justice demands it because our ancestors as forced laborers transformed America into the economic world power that it remains today, because our ancestors died for America in all of its wars, and because our ancestors had their freedom, culture, family, language, land, religion, name, and often their sanity, limbs, and even lives ruthlessly stripped from them for three centuries by America (and other European-initiated slave trading countries) in a manner unlike anything ever experienced in the history of humankind. ATAC also requires the commemorative project because it an essential step toward telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about American history.

Excerpts from PBS's  "History Detectives" Transcriptions:

Liberty Bell travels to Atlanta in 1895:

Harvey: Well, the Liberty Bell was an important national symbol. And to bring that here showed, in a very tangible way, that Atlantans felt that the Civil War was over and that they were ready to reconcile and be a place where Northern capital could come and build factories.

Elyse: You know, this whole thing seems very political to me. Almost like a PR stunt.

Harvey: It definitely was a PR stunt.

Elyse: So I get why the South wanted the Liberty Bell. But why in the world would Philadelphia let this prized possession come all the way down South? Harvey tells me that Northern politicians, like Stratton, felt there was much to be gained by bringing the bell to Atlanta.

Harvey: This was an opportunity for Northern bankers to provide investment capital for this region that needed it very badly.

Elyse: Atlanta rolled out the red carpet for Stratton and the Philadelphians, even declaring a Liberty Bell Day.

Harvey: Look at some of the headlines. "Our Bell Now." And "Atlantans have captured the relic from Philadelphia."

Elyse: Oh, it says here, visitors say they never witnessed such an enthusiastic demonstration. Bringing the bell South had been a master stroke. So it worked.

Harvey: It worked. It helped to reconcile the North and the South.

Elyse: But Harvey tells me that reconciliation came at a cost. Unifying North and South ultimately helped cement segregation, a reality that seemed to be accepted in the expo's opening day speech by black leader, Booker T. Washington.

Harvey: That speech, the so-called Atlanta Comprise Speech, became one of the most defining moments in American race relations. Washington said, "Whites and Blacks should be as separate as the fingers on the hand and yet function as one hand."

Elyse: Ironically, the Liberty Bell played an unwitting role in this process that left Southern blacks far from free.
