ALMOST IRON: CHEF JEHANGIR MEHTA
Chef Jehangir Mehta has been called one of the hardest working men in the food business, eloquent, and a really nice guy. A visit to his East Village (NYC) restaurant, "Graffiti," - a restaurant he opened in 2007- confirms the above. Much to the amusement of his family's maids and cooks, Mumbai-born Jehangir took an interest in what went on in the kitchen, and eventually voiced a desire to pursue a career in the culinary arts. With the support of his family, he was sent to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York, where he thrived, having acquired a good foundation at the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering, Technology, and Applied Nutrition in Mumbai. Jehangir went on to work with several chefs at as many restaurants, including, James Chew (Typhoon Brewery); Rocco di Spirito (Union Pacific); Didier Virot (Virot and Compass); and then also, with Didier Virot, opened the Upper West Side's "Compass." Over the years, Jehangir Mehta has been seen on many national television programs, including Martha! and on Food Network. In August, 2009, he competed in "Iron Chef America," against Iron Chef Masarahu Morimoto, and was a contestant in Food Network's "The Next Iron Chef," last season, where he was edged out in the end by Chef Jose Garces, having beat 8 chefs prior to the finale.
