In this episode of AKANFO NANASOM - Ancient Authentic Akan Ancestral Religion, we examine the origins of the Goofer (Goopher) Doctor and 'goopher dust' in Hoodoo. As we have shown in our publication HOODOO PEOPLE and related publications, Hoodoo is the Akan tradition in North America. The role of the Okomfo or Komfo, a class of priest/ess, healer/healerss, conjure/conjuress in Akan culture, was/is maintained in name and function in Afurakani/Afuraitkaitnit (African) American Hoodoo in North America as the 'Goofer Doctor'.
We examine the etymological and cosmological foundations of komfo (goopher, goofer) and the goofer dust used ritually.
