Talking RACE in HOPE AND with COURAGE.
Photobucket

Most Americans believe that a solution to the nation's problems in race-relations would be resolved - a level of optimism that is essentially unchanged from a year ago, just before the election of the first African-American president, Barack Obama. As measured by the Gallup Poll, race rests at about the same level recorded when Gallup first inquired about the question of RACE in December of 1963. Among Black Americans surveyed, optimism about an eventual solution to race-relations problems actually has decreased since last summer - from 50 to 42 percent.
So we gather and build OUR COMMON GROUND.

PUBLIC EDUCATION IN AMERICA Community Response FAILURE not ACCEPTABLE How do we participate in the transformation of public education and build a more successful set of educational outcomes ? How do we create real strategies at the local level ? How do we block the illusion of change, and establish workable and success-based solutions for our children? Where do we fulfill our obligatio...n to be part of the solutions? I was surprisingly impressed by The Obama Education tour discussion is a great starting point with Duncan, Gingrich and Sharpton . . . but where are the educational professionals ? What is the responsibilities of community of to all children who attend public schools ? Can we place all the responsibilities and tasks on the shoulders of parents and schools ? I think not.

OUR COMMON GROUND with Janice Graham
Talking RACE with HOPE and in COURAGE

There is a prevalent misconception that racism is a self-contained problem. The myth goes like this: unless a hooded clansman is burning a cross on an African American family's lawn, the United States is not dealing with traditional racism. Our country has transcended race, since the election of President Obama, this myth says. Furthermore, race is only a relevant factor when something overtly hostile happens to our leader, who happens to be black (not that any of us notice, since we have transcended the problem of racism). The myth leaves no room for discussions of institutionalized racism, or the acceptance that race and racism are always in the room with us, and not just when President Obama delivers nuanced, thoughtful speeches about them.

Race has infrequently been addressed in this fashion possibly because it removes racism from the territory of crazy, right-wing protesters and delivers the blame to larger institutions like the private health care industry, and the United States government at large. It's one thing to make fun of Rush Limbaugh's ignorance, it's another thing to ask multi-billion dollar industries to change their racist practices, or accuse the entire government of being rotten at the foundation. Such accusations would earn a dissenter the title of "race-baiter," or one who "plays the race card." These kinds of platitudes are usually euphemisms for "You're making me uncomfortable. Don't rile up the black folk. Shut up."

As much as white Americans hate to admit it, we are always talking about race, even when we're not poking fun at Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck. Race and racism will play a huge roll in the health care reform debate, and not just when Joe Wilson is the topic of discussion. Rep. Donna Edwards has said that proposed legislation overhauling health care would likely address racial disparities in education and health among children. Let's hope so. At least then the discussion of race and racism may reap some productive rewards instead of more empty chatter about Joe Wilson's motives.

"Finding Black Voice: American Media "

    Paul Porter of Industry Ears

The Black Voice. Where does it find its place in the public square. Where is the place that is devoted to providing a forum for African Americans, providing information and opportunity to form and bring the opinions of African Americans to the political discourse and policy decision makers? Relevant Empowering and Activist Voice ? Print, TV and Radio?

    ABOUT PAUL PORTER

After working at BET and the top three radio companies for over 20 years in New York and Wash., DC. Nobody is more qualified to tell the story of payola than Paul Porter. For more than 2 decades, Paul Porter has been a prominent voice in American radio and television. From AT&T to Showtime, his baritone voice and on-camera talent has been recognized in over a half-dozen top venues, while his personality has resonated on the airwaves of numerous radio stations, and as the announcer for seven consecutive NBA All-Star Shows. In 2003, after almost a decade at BET and other radio stations in D.C. and New York, including 3 years at WBLS-FM. He began work as an on-air personality at WRKS/KISS FM, an urban AC station, and the sister station of New York’s #1 Hip-Hop station, Hot97/WQHT-FM. Two years later, having been involved with the hip-hop music industry for much of his career, his focus took a dramatic shift after an incident involving a controversial song by rapper Rah Digga, as the nation watched it play out on Fox’s “Hannity and Colmes. Having protested the immorality of the music being played on Hot97/WQHT, Porter was promptly removed from the air, spurring his movement from endorser to activist.

On January 15, 2005, he co-founded IndustryEars, a think-tank created to identify and correct injustices in the media. Since then, he has been using his voice and his experience to personally advocate for increased awareness and consciousness in the media industry. His history in the industry can’t be documented in the space allocated and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

. Porter shows that what listeners actually "prefer" to hear is a trick and gives us a glimpse into what is really happening within the radio and music industries.

Examining long-term, trans-inter-generational post traumatic slave syndrome in the context of contemporary family, youth, and social infrastructure failures.

Immoral anti-social and civic behavior; social

dysfunction, mental and emotional illness, illiteracy and addictive behavior in the Black community. What are the roots ?

Psychic trauma is defined as an inescapable event that overwhelms an individual’s existing coping mechanism. The stressors in PTSD could be markedly distressing to anyone and experience intense fear, terror and helplessness. Such gruesome situations experienced as being brutally raped or assaulted; in bloody hand-tohand combat; severely tortured in death camps; continuous bombing; trapped for several days in a deep mining tunnel; and other severe life-threatening situations in life.

It’s irrelevant that you weren’t alive during slavery days. I wasn’t there either! But what we as a nation face today has been heavily impacted by our history, whether we’re talking in the gulf between the haves and have-nots; education gaps between white and black children; or the racial disparities in our prisons.

The discussion will be base on the work of Dr Joy De Gruy on Post Tramuatic Slave Syndrome

Dr. Joy DeGruy is a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, author and presenter. Dr. Joy, as most know her, is a tell-it-like-it-is ambassador for healing and a voice for those who've struggled in search of the past, and continue to struggle through the present. A highly skilled and educated activist for social justice, Dr. Joy reaches people on the community level and has a captivating way of persuading others to search for a deeper understanding of themselves.

Dr. Joy is the acclaimed author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome—America's Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing, and the newly released, Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: The Study Guide. In P.T.S.S.: The Study Guide, Dr. Joy revisits the topics she covers in P.T.S.S. and provides a detailed mapping of how you can begin the change process in your personal life, employment, family and in your community. She illustrates how—with thoughtful self–exploration—each of us can evaluate our behaviors and replace negative and damaging behaviors with those that will promote, ensure and sustain the healing and advancement of African Americans.
